AIKEN, S.C. - University of South Carolina Aiken men’s tennis standout Antonio Sabugueiro has been named the Hutson-Etherredge Companies and Auto-Owners Insurance USC Aiken Athletic Department Student-Athlete of the Week for the week ending April 21, 2019.
Sabugueiro, a 5-7 junior from Sintra, Portugal, guided the Pacers to the PBC Championship match and a 3-1 record for the week.
For the week, he went 3-1 at No. 3 singles and 3-1 at No. 1 doubles, along with Salvador Bandeira.
In the regular-season finale against No. 11 North Georgia, he won his singles match 6-2, 6-2 and notched a 6-0 victory in doubles. In the PBC Quarterfinal against No. 38 Augusta, Sabugueiro was part of the winning doubles team by a 6-2 score. He won his doubles match 6-4, 6-0.
In the semifinals against No. 5 Flagler, Sabugueiro and Bandeira teamed up for a 7-6 (7-5) win in doubles action. With the team score tied at 3-3, Sabugeiro’s 4-6, 7-6, 6-3 victory in singles action clinched the match for USC Aiken while sending the team to the PBC Championship match.
Sabugeiro and the rest of the team will now wait their seeding in the upcoming NCAA Southeast Regional, which will be played May 11-14.
