AIKEN, S.C. – University of South Carolina Aiken volleyball standout Rebecca Martinez has been named the Hutson-Etherredge Companies and Auto-Owners Insurance USC Aiken Athletic Department Student-Athlete of the Week for the week ending Sept. 2, 2018.
Martinez, a junior from Wellington, Fla., guided the Pacers to a 3-0 week.
The 5-5 libero was outstanding at the Valdosta State Tournament, especially in the final match.
She posted three consecutive match-high efforts for digs. In the first contest against Albany State, Martinez wrapped up 10 digs in the sweep to go along with an ace. In the three-set victory over host Valdosta State, she accounted for 24 digs, two assists and an ace.
Against Spring Hill, Martinez was sensational. Her career-high 43 digs shattered a four-set school record and tops Division II currently for digs in a four-set match this season.
For the week, Martinez totaled 77 digs in 10 sets, registering 7.70 digs per frame. She currently leads Division II with 8.37 digs per set. She also tops the PBC with 159 total digs.
