Throughout June, Pacer Athletics will feature a Top Moment for each sport from the 2021-22 academic year. The 11th and final Top Moment comes from the softball program.
During an outstanding season, head coach
Jaclin Poole had a lot of firsts. The program established multiple school records during the season – both individually and collectively. However, the top moment of the season occurred during the home series against No. 12 North Georgia. The Pacers took two-of-three from the visitors, clinching the series.
After dropping the first game, USC Aiken put together an outstanding 3-2 win over the Nighthawks. With a dominant effort from
Lakyn Phillips in the circle, the Pacers jumped out to a 2-0 lead off an
Emily Ayers two-run dinger in the third inning.
The Nighthawks tied the game at 2-2 in the fifth. Neither team could muster another run through regulation. In the eighth inning,
Brooke Moore stepped into the box and crushed an 0-1 pitch over the wall for the game-winning walk-off homer. It marked the first time USC Aiken had defeated UNG since the 2014 campaign.
On Apr. 16, the team sent Phillips back to the circle and she went toe-to-toe with Kristen Davis. Neither team got on the board through the first five innings. The Nighthawks had multiple chances, but outstanding defensive efforts held the game scoreless.
In the bottom of the sixth,
Jena Dewalt broke the game open with a bases clearing double.
Ashlyn White's single drove in the final run in the 4-0 win.
In the circle, Phillips tossed a shutout, registering four strikeouts on the day.
