Throughout June, Pacer Athletics will feature a Top Moment for each sport from the 2021-22 academic year. The 10th Top Moment comes from the baseball program.
Facing a tough task by taking on No. 8 Columbus State, USC Aiken looked to even the series against the Cougars on March 13. They not only topped CSU, but did so by a decisive 6-0 score.Â
After jumping out to a 4-0 lead in the second, the Pacers tacked on a run in the sixth and the eighth for the victory.Â
Carson Suess' RBI double that drove in
Kaden Blankenship to get things going was all that
Joel Haney needed in his tremendous effort. Haney, who earned all-region and all-league accolades, twirled a one-hit gem against the high-powered offense. He was outstanding on the bump, registering 12 strikeouts against two walks while giving up just one hit in the complete-game shutout victory. Haney threw 126 pitches in the game.Â
Offensively,
Jeff Cyr led the way with a three-RBI performance while
Tyler Littlefield and Suess each crossed home twice.
Sean McQuillan had three hits and Blankenship notched two.
Despite the great offensive game, what many talked about afterwards was Haney's performance. Throughout the season, Haney had a stretch of over 35 consecutive scoreless innings, but shutting down the potent offense of the Cougars in dominating fashion topped the list for top moment of the season for head coach
Michael Holder's team.
