India Kornegay Sets Division II Record With 18-Strikeout, 6-Inning Perfect Game

In the spring of 2014, head softball coach Jerry Snyder knew he had a talented team. With a tremendous core group returning from the 2013 season and numerous incoming student-athletes with outstanding talent, the team was poised to do something special.

Making an NCAA Tournament appearance and picking up the program's first postseason victory could arguably be the team highlight of the season, but there were numerous moments during the year that stood out.

Standing out for that team was par for the course. Brimming with talent at every position, the squad only needed two people during one game that stood out from the rest. Little did anyone realize that the team would make NCAA Division II history on Feb. 22, 2014.

The Pacers opened the season with five straight wins and were 6-2 heading into a neutral site weekend that saw them face off against Paine, Mansfield, Barton and Tiffin.

Making NCAA history came against the Lions. While playing in Raleigh, N.C. for the weekend event hosted by Shaw, Snyder's team erupted for a 10-0 victory over Paine. Samantha Chubb led the way with four RBI while Ashley Metts had three and Madison Labrador chipped in one. Chubb had three hits in the contest while Brielle Jungblut added two. Metts and Kaitlyn White scored three times and twice, respectively. However, that wasn't the big part of the game.

Senior India Kornegay was in the circle and Hillary Stewart was behind the plate defensively. Kornegay, heading into the game, was 3-0 and poised to earn honorable mention All-America accolades by the end of the season.

Against Paine, Kornegay became the first Division II student-athlete to strike out every batter she faced. In the six-inning victory, Kornegay had 18 strikeouts and threw just 71 pitches. It marked not only the first perfect game in USC Aiken history (documented) but it also marked the school record for strikeouts in a game.

Kornegay had 17 strikeouts with batters swinging while just one went down on strikes looking.
