The first story in the series features a story from 2016. The seventh-seeded USC Aiken softball team took part of the PBC Tournament. The Pacers, sitting on the verge of the NCAA Tournament, needed to make a run in the PBC Championship in order to earn a berth to the NCAA Southeast Region.

On the first day of the PBC Tournament, No. 7 USC Aiken squared off against No. 2 Armstrong State. During the regular season, the Pacers dropped both games of the doubleheader to the Pirates by scores of 8-2 and 7-0. However, they squared off in the first game of the tournament.

Head coach Jerry Snyder's team prevailed by a 5-3 score in eight innings. The squad knocked off No. 3 Young Harris in the semifinals, reaching the PBC Championship, becoming the first-ever No. 7 seed to earn a spot in the title game. Despite the loss to No. 1 North Georgia, USC Aiken earned the No. 6 seed in the NCAA Southeast Tournament.
