No. 7 Pacers Send No. 2 Pirates Overboard with 5-3 Win

Box Score

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The No. 7 seeded University of South Carolina Aiken softball team upended No. 2 Armstrong State in the first game of the Peach Belt Conference Tournament.

The Pacers improve to 28-19 on the season. The win marks the first PBC Tournament win for head coach Jerry Snyder's team since a 5-2 win over North Georgia on Apr. 20, 2013.

USC Aiken jumped on top with a run in the top of the first. Sarah Montei reached on an error to lead off the game. With one down, she scooted to third on a grounder before trotting home on Magan Thrower's double down the left field line.

The Pirates knotted the contest in the bottom of the first, but after it was tied Taylor Morgan shut the higher seed down for the next five frames.

Morgan retired the side in order and got out of a two-on, one-out jam in the third.

The Pacers had a chance to take the lead in the fourth after Thrower singled up the middle to start things off. Sydney Murphy singled through the left side of the infield, but three straight outs ended the visiting team's threat.

Morgan retired the side in order in the fourth and fifth stanzas, but Armstrong State pushed across a pair of runs in the sixth for a 3-1 lead.

Chandler Terrapin got things going for the Pacers in the seventh with a lead-off double to center field. With one down, Andrea Daring launched a 230-foot shot over the left-field fence, knotting the score at 3-3.

Morgan battled through some adversity in the bottom of the seventh as the Pirates had the game-winning run on third base. However, she forced a fly ball out that Montei snagged the shot, forcing the eighth inning.

Thrower led off the extra fame with a single to left field. Murphy reached on a fielder's choice, erasing Thrower. Hannah Price blasted a pitch that sailed into center field. The ball continued to rise slightly and ended up at the fence. Murphy hustled from first, scoring on the triple.

Leading 4-3, Brielle Jungblut came in as a pinch runner for Price and scored on Terrapin's sacrifice fly for a 5-3 margin.

Morgan promptly retired the side in order, sending the Pacers to the semifinals.

For the game, Thrower led the way with three hits. Montei registered two hits while Daring drove in a pair of runs.

Morgan was sensational in the circle, tossing a complete game. She struck out three in the win.

Daring's homer pushed her into a tie for seventh place on the career list.

The Pacers return to action tomorrow at 11 a.m. Live stats, video and audio will be available at PacerSports.com. The team plays the winner of No. 3 Young Harris and No. 6 Lander.
