MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The No. 7 University of South Carolina Aiken softball team pounded out 15 hits, including four homers, in the 11-3 victory over No. 3 Young Harris in the Peach Belt Conference semifinal.
The Pacers improve to 29-19 on the season while the Mountain Lions fall to 32-18.
USC Aiken becomes the first No. 7 seed to ever advance to PBC Championship game.
Head coach Jerry Snyder's team opened the scoring with a run in the second. With two down, Taylor Morgan singled up the middle and hustled home when Andrea Daring launched a deep fly ball that was dropped for a 1-0 edge.
The Pacers increased the margin to 3-0 in the third. Julianne Leduc led off the frame with a sharp single to center field. Taylor Allen pinch ran for Leduc and scampered to second on a wild pitch. Samantha Chubb laid down an excellent sacrifice bunt, putting Allen on third. Allen was able to trot home when Magan Thrower launched a two-run homer over the left field wall.
Young Harris plated a run in the bottom half of the frame, making it 3-1.
After a scoreless fourth stanza, Snyder's squad went back to work in the fifth. Leduc led off the inning with a single down the left field line and moved to second on Chubb's single through the left side of the infield. A walk to Thrower loaded the bases. After two outs, Chandler Terrapin blasted a towering shot that curled around the left field pole for a grand slam, pushing the score to 7-1.
The Mountain Lions clawed back with a run in the fifth. The designated home team made it a 7-3 contest with a run in the sixth, but Morgan got out of a jam, striking out the final batter of the frame with two YHC runners on the base paths.
Thrower led off the seventh with a walk and Leah Boghosian came in as a pinch runner. Sydney Murphy took a 2-2 pitch over the left center field wall for a 9-3 advantage. After Hannah Price ripped a single up the middle, the Mountain Lions switched pitchers.
With one down, Morgan helped her own cause with a rocket down the left field line for the team's fourth round-tripper of the game and an 11-3 margin.
YHC loaded the bases with one out, but Morgan forced a pop fly and a line-drive to Sarah Timmerman clinched the game for USC Aiken.
Leduc led everyone with three hits. Sarah Montei, Thrower, Terrapin and Morgan had two hits apiece. Terrapin led everyone with four RBI while Morgan and Terrapin had two apiece.
In the circle, Morgan tossed a complete game, striking out eight. She walked just one in the victory.
