MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The No. 7 University of South Carolina Aiken softball team made Peach Belt Conference history by reaching the Peach Belt Conference Championship game, but the squad came up short in the 8-0 loss to No. 1 North Georgia.
The Pacers are now 29-20 on the season.
Head coach Jerry Snyder's team fought hard throughout, but was unable to knock off another higher seed. However, the squad was the first No. 7 seed to ever make the championship contest.
In the top of the second frame, Magan Thrower roped a scorcher through the left side of the infield. After Taylor Allen came in as a pinch runner, she moved to second when Sydney Murphy executed a sacrifice bunt. However, USC Aiken was unable to push her across.
Taylor Morgan, who had thrown two complete games in just over 24 hours, was solid through the first two frames.
With one out in the third, Morgan gave up a solo homer, but she managed to get back on track by forcing a pop fly for the second out. The Nighthawks were able to score two more runs in the stanza for a 3-0 edge.
Hannah Price came in and struck out her first batter for the final out of the inning. Price gave up just one hit in the fourth, but turned away UNG.
After the designated home team scored two runs in the fifth, the Pacers continued to apply pressure. With two outs in the sixth, Sarah Montei blasted a single to left center, but it was the last time Snyder's team could garner a base runner.
USC Aiken placed three on the all-tournament team. For their stellar effort in the tournament, Taylor Morgan, Chandler Terrapin and Magan Thrower picked up the prestigious honor.
Morgan registered 12 strikeouts in the tournament and also smashed a two-run homer. Terrapin's big hit came via a grand slam while Thrower was stellar at the plate, driving in three while batting over .500.
The Pacers will await the NCAA Selection Show after the conclusion of the other conference tournaments next weekend.
