AIKEN, S.C. – University of South Carolina Aiken baseball standout Joseph Benitez has been named the Willie Jewell's USC Aiken Athletic Department Student-Athlete of the Week for the week ending March 12, 2017.

Benitez, a senior left-handed pitcher from Crofton, Md., tossed an absolute jewel in the 11-3 victory over No. 1 Nova Southeastern.

A native of Crofton, Md., Benitez baffled the Sharks by tossing 7.1 strong innings. He struck out nine batters while walking just one. Benitez surrendered three runs on three hits and left with an 8-3 lead.

The nine strikeouts were the third most this season by Benitez and helped USC Aiken clinch the series with the Sharks.

His victory pushed him into a tie at the top spot in the PBC with five victories. Benitez is currently 5-1 on the year.   

The Willie Jewell's USC Aiken Athletic Department Student-Athlete of the Week honors one student-athlete each week from an in-season sport for their hard work and effort.
