AIKEN, S.C. – University of South Carolina volleyball standout
Rebecca Martinez has been named the South Carolina Education Lottery USC Aiken Student-Athlete of the Month for September.
Martinez, a 5-5 junior from Wellington, Fla., guided the Pacers to an 8-1 month.
The Division II leader in digs averaged 9.30 digs per frame, registering 279 in September. She also added 41 assists, six aces and two kills for good measure.
Martinez posted a school-record 39 digs in the sweep of Carson-Newman. She accounted a career-best 43 digs in the four-set win over Spring Hill as both were tops in Division II at that time.
In seven of the nine matches she posted at least 20 digs – and five times reached 30-plus digs.
During September, Martinez had three of the top 10 overall dig performances in school history. She had seven matches that entered the USC Aiken single match top-10 record book in the month for digs in a three, four or five-set match.
The South Carolina Education Lottery USC Aiken Athletic Department Student-Athlete of the Month award honors one student-athlete each month from an in-season sport for their hard work and effort. Each month during the 2018-19 athletic year one winner will be chosen from an in-season sport.
