CLINTON, Miss. – The USCA volleyball team split a pair of matches at the PBC-Gulf South Crossover on Friday. The team defeated Mississippi Christian 3-2 before falling to UAH 3-0.
The Pacers are now 8-1 on the season.
Against Mississippi Christian, head coach
Glenn Cox's team was guided by
Alli Bishop's 15-kill, 12-dig effort.
Chloe Duzenack notched a double-double with 11 kills and 10 digs while
Lexi Rogers added 10 kills and eight digs.
Olivia Miller had seven kills.
Madison Fox added a double-double with 19 assists and 11 digs while
Olivia Moffett added 16 assists and three solo blocks. Duzenack dished out two aces in the win.
Defensively,
Avery Pearson had two blocks. Bishop, Duzenack, Miller and Rogers all had one block each.
Kira Bostick turned in a 32-dig effort, marking the second most in her career.
Trailing 6-2 in the first frame, Fox found Duzenack for a kill. Down 14-6, Bishop found the court for a point. Two miscues by the home team and an ace from Pearson made it 16-10. Moments later, two straight errors by Mississippi Christian made the contest 20-17. However, a 5-1 run by the Choctaws ended the set.
A miscue and two points from Bishop gave Cox's squad a 5-1 edge in the second frame. Duzenack and Miller added kills and the home team took a time-out trailing 9-3. Leading 15-14, Bishop notched a kill. Miller posted back-to-back kills for a four-point cushion, 18-14. A 4-0 spurt extended the margin to five, 22-17. Duzenack had a kill in the run while Moffett and Rogers each had solo blocks. Bishop ended the frame moments later with a kill.
USCA opened the third set on a 5-2 run with a pair of points coming from Pearson. The squad extended the margin to 12-6 on a service error. Kills from Duzenack and Rogers gave the Pacers an 18-16 lead. Three plays later, Rogers' attack sliced through defenders for a 20-17 working margin. Following a kill from Bishop, MC called a time-out. Leading 24-19, Fox connected with Bishop for the final point of the set, giving the visitors a 2-1 lead.
Trailing 8-6 in the fourth stanza, two errors knotted the set at 8-8. Moments later, Bishop garnered a kill off the pass from Bostick for a 10-9 advantage. Facing an 18-13 deficit, a bad set gave USCA the side-out. Miller recorded a block and Rogers hammered home a kill. Down 19-16, Moffett connected with Miller for a point before Bostick served up an ace, forcing a time-out. USCA was unable to knot the set as the home team pulled out a 25-21 win.
Back-to-back points from Bishop gave the Pacers an early 3-2 lead in the fifth frame. USCA tied the contest at 6-6 and 7-7 on points by Duzenack and Rogers. Duzenack took a pass from Moffett and hammered home a kill, making it 8-8. Down 10-8, Bishop and
Rusne Radaviciute posted kills. A point from Radaviciute and a block from Duzenack tied the set at 13-13. An error by the home team and an ace from Moffett gave USCA the come-from-behind fifth-set win.
Against UAH, Bishop led the way with a match-best 10 kills and five digs. Miller had five kills and three blocks while Rogers totaled five kills and six digs.
Fox dished out 15 assists and added four digs. Moffett distributed 10 assists. Bostick led the back line with a match-high 15 digs.
The Pacers trailed 11-5 in the opening set. Miller had a block before Bostick posted an ace. Moffett blocked an attempt before Rogers slammed home a kill. A miscue by the home team made it 11-10. Miller tallied a point and Bostick posted another ace, pulling the team within three, 21-18. However, the Chargers pulled off a 25-21 win.
Holding a 5-4 lead in the second frame, Rogers and
Bailey Corrigan notched kills. Miller stuffed an attack for a four-point cushion. Up 8-7, Corrigan found the court. Another kill from Corrigan moments later gave USCA a 12-8 lead. However, an 8-1 run gave UAH a 16-13 edge before Pearson posted a kill, sparking a run. Two plays later, Rogers knotted the set at 16-16 on a kill. An ace by
Ella Hukel propelled the Pacers to an 18-16 margin. Miller's block pushed the score to 19-18 in favor of the Pacers. Down 22-20, Miller recorded a kill. However, that was as close as the team could get in the 25-22 loss.
Fox gave USCA an early 3-2 edge in the third frame. Down 8-6, two miscues by the Chargers tied the score at 8-8. Duzenack's point made it 11-9, but UAH reeled off six consecutive points before Bishop added a kill. Down 18-10, an error gave USCA the side-out. Bishop hammered home a pass from Hukel before Hukel notched an ace. Bishop sliced the defense on back-to-back plays, and Hukel's ace cut the deficit to two, 18-16. Trailing 22-17, a service error gave the Pacers the serve. Rogers and Duzenack posted back-to-back points off passes from Moffett. USCA cut the deficit to two but could not get any closer in the 25-21 loss.
