Second-Half Run Dooms USC Aiken

Box Score SAVANNAH, Ga.--USC Aiken fell to Savannah College of Art & Design (SCAD), 72-58, tonight in a match-up of men's basketball teams at the 2004 Armstrong Atlantic/Chatham Orthopedics Basketball Classic, hosted by Armstrong Atlantic State University in Savannah, Ga. Shaun Watson led SCAD (5-8) with 23 points and Ryan Kaminiski scored 16 points and grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds. Marcus Robinson led the Pacers (4-5) with nine points. 

A jumper by Josh Poston and a three-pointer from Josh Geyer gave USCA and early 9-3 advantage with 16:53 to go in the first half. The Pacers led until Kaminiski cashed in on a lay-up and free throw to tie the score at 18 with 5:45 showing on the clock. 

USC Aiken put together a 7-1 run to push out in front again, 26-19, with 3:39 to go before intermission. Gerard Bowden's jumper with 38 ticks left cut the deficit to four points and sent the Bees to the locker room trailing 30-26.

A Richard Blocker lay-up put the Pacers up by six with 19:27 remaining in the game. Watson began a 12-1 SCAD run with 16:19 to go that erased the USCA lead and put the Bees in front by six. Back-to-back three pointers from Poston and Boyd tied the score, 41-41, with 11:46 left to play.

After those two three-point baskets, the Pacers connected on just one of their next eight shots from the field and watched SCAD use a 22-5 run to build a 17-point lead with 4:45 remaining. Nathan Henderson scored seven of his nine points during the run. 

USC Aiken cut the margin to 12 points on two occasions but would get no closer. The Pacers made just nine-of-33 second half shots for 27.3 percent. For the game USCA hit on 32.8 percent (21-of-64).

After making just seven-of-22 shot attempts in the first half, the Bees connected on 44.1 percent in the second half. Watson went eight-of-10 from the field, hit both of his three-point attempts, and five-of-seven from the free throw line for his game-high 23 points. He added four rebounds, four assists and three steals.

The Pacers return to action on Saturday when they play Lenoir-Rhyne College, on day two of the 2004 Armstrong Atlantic/Chatham Orthopedics Basketball Classic, at 4:00 p.m.
