USC Aiken Drops Two

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SPARTANBURG, S.C.--USC Aiken and USC Spartanburg combined to hit eight home runs in a Peach Belt Conference softball doubleheader yesterday in Spartanburg, S.C. The Lady Rifles hit four homers in a 10-4 game one win. The Lady Pacers knocked two balls out in the first game and two more in the second, which USCS came from behind to win by a 6-5 score. USCA drops to 13-12 overall and 1-3 in the PBC. Spartanburg improves to 18-2 on the season and 5-1 in league play.

The Lady Rifles jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead after one inning in game one. With one out and one run already across the plate, Jackie Sepulveda homered with two runners on to give USCS its early lead.

USC Aiken got on the board in a big way in the fifth inning. Jami Cornwell reached on a fielder's choice that scored Meghan Lynch from third base for the Lady Pacers' first run. Sarah Harvey's home run cut the USC Spartanburg lead to 4-3. Two batters later, Jennifer Scott tied the game on her own with a solo dinger.

Harvey finished with two hits in three at bats, a walk, a run scored and two RBIs. Scott went two-for-three with a run scored and an RBI.

USCS answered USC Aiken's big inning with one of its own in the bottom half of the fifth to put the game away. After a leadoff single, Karly Justice gave the lead back to the Lady Rifles with a two-run blast over the outfield wall. After a strike out, Spartanburg went back-to-back with home runs by Sepulveda and Kacey Ayers to build an 8-4 lead.

Justice went three-for-three at the plate for the Lady Rifles with a run scored and three RBIs. Sepulveda had two hits in two at bats, both of which were long balls, two walks, two runs and four RBIs.

USC Spartanburg added two more runs in the sixth to account for the 10-4 victory.
The Lady Rifles jumped out ahead quickly in game two as well with two runs in the first inning. USC Aiken answered just as quickly however.

Kelly Ford's single in the top of the second drove in Ashley Dyches and cut the Spartanburg lead in half. Cornwell tied the game with a leadoff home run in the top of the third inning. After a single by Harvey, Scott gave the Lady Pacers a two run lead with her second homer of the day and her team leading sixth of the season.

Cornwell finished game two with two hits in four at bats, a run scored and an RBI. Scott went two-for-three with a run scored and two RBIs.

USC Aiken loaded the bases with no one out in the top of the fifth but could only push across one run, and that would prove costly. Harvey scored on a wild pitch to give the Lady Pacers a 5-2 advantage.

A two run double by Justice in the home half of the fifth inning brought the Lady Rifles to within 5-4. A ground ball, two batters later, allowed the tying run to come across the plate in the form of Allie Cyrill.

Scott singled in the top of the seventh to put the go ahead run on base. Amy Fox pinch ran and advanced to second on a wild pitch. A single by Ragen Reeves put runners at the corners with two outs but Lynch flied out to left field to end the inning and the threat.

USC Spartanburg took advantage of USC Aiken's missed opportunities in the bottom of the seventh. Back-to-back errors by the visitors, with a runner on base, allowed the game winner to cross the plate.

The Lady Pacers will return to action on Thursday when they host Alderson-Broaddus College for a non-conference doubleheader, beginning at 4:00 p.m.
