Box Score JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn.--USC Aiken lost to Carson-Newman College, 105-72, tonight (Dec. 15) in a match-up of men's basketball teams in Jefferson City, Tenn. The Eagles (3-6) jumped out to an 11-0 lead and watched the Pacers (4-4) cut the deficit to four before using a 24-0 run to build a 30-point halftime lead.
Marcus Robinson scored a career-best 20 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead USCA. Andy Tipton connected on 10-of-14 from the floor, including six-of-nine from beyond the three-point arch, to lead CNC with 28 points.
Andy Tipton's three-pointer with 17:47 left in the first half capped 11 unanswered Carson-Newman points to start the game. Robinson finally got the Pacers on the board with a free-throw at the 17:09 mark. Tipton's lay-up, three seconds later put the Eagles out in front 13-1.
A 7-0 USC Aiken run, including four points from
Curt Triplin, drew the Pacers to within four points, 21-17, with 11:34 remaining in the first half. After Triplin's free throw made the score 28-21 with 8:37 to go before intermission, USCA went scoreless for the next seven and a half minutes and CNC scored 24 unanswered. Carson-Newman went into the locker room leading 54-24.
The Pacers hit on just eight-of-33 attempts from the field in the first half for 24.2 percent. CNC made 19-of-34 for 55.9 percent.
Two Triplin free-throws and a lay-up by Robinson with 13:43 left in the game cut the deficit to 25 points, 66-41, but Pacers would get no closer. The Eagles maintained control of the game and took their largest lead with just over four minutes remaining, 42 points, 99-57.
USC Aiken improved to 43.2 percent (19-of-44) from the field in the second half but CNC shot better too, making 20-of-32 for 62.5 percent. For the game, USCA shot 35.1 percent and the Eagles hit on 59.1 percent.
Carson-Newman dished out 32 assists led by Braun Dabbs' 12 assists. Jonathan Martin finished with 24 points and 10 rebounds for the Eagles.
Josh Poston finished with 15 points while Triplin came off the bench and scored 11.
The Pacers will be back in action again on Friday and Saturday when they participate in the 2004 Armstrong Atlantic/Chatham Orthopedics Basketball Classic hosted by Armstrong Atlantic State University in Savannah, Ga. USCA will play Savannah College of Art & Design (SCAD) on Friday at 4:00 p.m. and Lenoir-Rhyne College on Saturday at 4:00 p.m.
