TALLAHASSEE, FLA--USC Aiken closed out the 2004 Seminole Intercollegiate, hosted by Florida State University, in 12th place at 70-over-par. Georgia State captured the tournament title with a three-round total of 20-over-par.
The 54-hole event was contested at the 6,847 yard, par 72 Golden Eagle Country Club in Tallahassee, Fla.
The Pacers were the lone Division II team in the field that featured two teams each from the Southeastern Conference, Atlantic Coast Conference, and Conference USA.
Freshman Clint Smith closed out the tournament with a final round five-over-par 77 to place tied for 35th at 17-over-par. Sophomore Reggie Bergholtz carded an 81 to drop into a tie for 43rd at 19-over-par. Sophomore Dane Burkhart recorded an 82 to tie for 50th at 25-over-par. Scott Brown, a sophomore from North Augusta, recorded his best score of the three-round event with a 78 to place 54th. James McGhee withdrew from round three.
After recording 22 birdies in the opening two rounds, second only to Vanderbilt's 32, USC Aiken had just four birdies in Tuesday's final round. The Pacers were last in pars with 132 over the two days.
UAB's Tigh VanLeeuwen won in a playoff over day one leader Kellen Altman of the College of Charleston to take individual medalist honors. Both shot a two-under-par 214 after 54 holes.
USC Aiken will host the Seventh Annual Palmetto Intercollegiate on March 15-16 at Palmetto Golf Club.
