Best Start In PBC History Punctuated By Sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 FLORENCE, S.C.--The 11th-ranked USC Aiken Pacers (21-6, 11-1 PBC) got timely hitting and dominating pitching to post a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader sweep over #24 Francis Marion (19-11, 7-8 PBC) on Sunday afternoon at Cormell Field. USCA won game one 8-1 and claimed the nightcap 11-3. With the three-game sweep of the Patriots, the Pacers are off to their best PBC start in school history and remain tied atop the conference standings with #2 Georgia College & State at 11-1.

Winners of four-straight and seven of their last eight, USC Aiken got a gem of a performance in game one from sophomore hurler Beau Hill (5-0). The Aiken native tossed a complete-game allowing just one run on four hits and three walks while striking out a career-high 10 to remain unblemished on the year.

Scoreless through five innings, Darryl Pui led off the sixth with an infield bunt single and moved to second on a sacrifice by Ben Tankersley. Chad Jacobsen proceeded to single to left field driving in Pui as the Pacers grabbed the 1-0 advantage.

Pui finished 2-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI while Jacobsen added two RBI.

Still leading 1-0 in the top of the seventh, and runners on first and third with two outs, Pui smacked a grounder to shortstop Greg Phelps, but the ball took a bad hop and glanced off of Phelps' shoulder allowing Marc Joehnk to score. Instead of an inning-ending groundout, USCA opened the flood gates scoring seven runs on six hits in the inning to take commanding 8-0 lead.

Jacobsen drew a bases-loaded walk to plate Matt Spivey while Chris Sheehan and Ken Raborn tacked on RBI singles to center field. The final blow of the inning was Joehnk's two-out, RBI double down the left field line scoring Raborn and Sheehan.

Joehnk went 3-for-5 with two RBI while Spivey and Raborn each had two hits in the game.

Ryan Hewitt's pinch-hit single to center field drove in Jared Barkdoll with the Patriots' lone run of the game, breaking up Hill's shutout bid.

Cole McKellar (3-2) suffered the loss for FMU going 6.2 innings allowing four runs, all earned, on eight hits and two walks, striking out three.

In the second game, a seven-run first inning and another complete game on the mound propelled the Pacers to the 11-3 victory.

A shaky start by FMU starter Michael Williams enabled the seven-run first on four hits and two errors. Back-to-back errors to open the game, the second by Williams himself, was followed by a Jacobsen single, a strikeout, and then RBI walks drawn by Raborn and Cooper to make it 2-0.

With two out and two on, Spivey singled through the right side to plate a pair while John Sherrer singled home Jacobsen down the right field line and Pui capped off the big first frame with a two-RBI double to right center.

Pui finished 2-for-5 with two RBI while Jacobsen also had a multiple-hit game going 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

Sheehan widened the margin to 9-0 with a two-run blast in the second inning. His eighth homer of the season traveled 370 feet over the wall in right.

Williams (5-1) was roughed up for nine runs, only two earned, on six hits and two walks, striking out three in 2.0 innings of work.

Derek Kennamer went 3-for-4 with two runs scored while Justin Greene was 2-for-3.

Jon Paul (5-2) won his fifth-straight decision, tossing his seventh career complete game, allowing three earned runs on seven hits and three walks, fanning six.

USC Aiken returns home to host Barton in the first of a two-game, mid-week series beginning Tuesday, March 20 at 6:00 PM at Roberto Hernandez Stadium.
