AIKEN, S.C. – USCA had many thrilling moments throughout the action-packed 2025-26 season. On the diamond, on the court, on the course, on the pitch and on the links, PacerSports.com will highlight an unforgettable moment from each team.
Head coach
Keith Gorman's squad had several tremendous moments throughout the year. However, none can match what happened on Opening Day.
After a 6-3 win in the season opener over Mars Hill on Jan .30, the Pacers took on the Lions in a nightcap after the series-opening weekend was altered due to impending inclement weather.
Rookie
Ben Shepherd got the starting nod and did something that seemingly nobody else has done on Opening Day as a true freshman. He went out and picked up a complete game shutout while throwing a no-hitter.
In all, he faced 28 batters and had five strikeouts. Shepherd allowed just a fourth-inning lead-off walk in the tremendous outing. USCA went on to win 10-0 thanks in part to four RBI by
Yariel Diaz and three from
Blake Martin (Diaz, Martin and
Cameron Austin Jr., all hit home runs).
Due to the impressive outing, Shepherd garnered PBC Freshman and Pitcher of the Week honors, NCBWA Region Pitcher of the Week honors and NCBWA National Pitcher of the Week accolades.
