Box Score AIKEN, S.C.--Brevard (6-4) jumped out to a 4-0 lead and held off a ninth-inning rally by USC Aiken (7-3), escaping with a 7-5 win over the 14th ranked Pacers in non-conference baseball action on Tuesday evening at Roberto Hernandez Stadium. The Tornados scored five of their seven runs with two outs, halting USCA's winning streak at five games.
Spencer Linn's two-out double to left center in the opening frame plated Justin Frady to give Brevard a quick 2-0 advantage. Linn was perfect at the plate, going 3-for-3 with two doubles and a walk, and was nearly as flawless on the mound. The sophomore right-hander from Fletcher, N.C. scattered 10 hits over 8.0 innings of work, surrendering three runs, striking out three and walking one. Linn threw 72 of his 114 pitches for strikes.Â
Leading 3-0 in the fourth, Brice Warner smacked a two-out triple to left center, driving in Brandon Ball for the Tornados. Warner finished 2-for-4 while Luke Lovelace added a 3-for-6 night with two runs scored from the leadoff spot.Â
The Pacers broke into the scoring column in the home half of the fourth when
Zach Cooper came home on a wild pitch. Cooper was 2-for-5 on the night.Â
After Brandon Fleming's RBI groundout in the fifth again make it a four-run game 5-1,
Ken Raborn answered with an RBI single to right field plating
Chad Jacobsen to pull the Pacers within 5-2. Raborn finished 2-for-5 while Jacobsen was 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored.
Ben Tankersley continued his hot hitting with a pair of base-knocks while
Chris Sheehan was 3-for-5. Hitters two through five in the Pacers' lineup were a combined 9-for-19.Â
Sheehan (3) blasted his third home run of the season, a solo shot to right in the seventh to bring USCA within 5-3, but Brevard tacked on two more in the eighth.Â
In the ninth,
Josh Eachues had a bases loaded, infield single and
Alex Franklin was hit by a pitch as USCA drew within 7-5. With two outs and the bases loaded, however, Jordan Hotchkiss got Cooper to fly out to center field to end the game.Â
Houston Taylor (0-1) gave up five runs, three earned, on eight hits in 4.1 innings in the loss for USC Aiken.Â
The two teams combined for 25 hits, but stranded 26 base runners.Â
USC Aiken and Brevard will conclude their two-game, mid-week series tomorrow at 4:00 PM at Roberto Hernandez Stadium.Â
