Box Score AUGUSTA, Ga.--USC Aiken led Augusta State by one with 12:09 left in the game but the Jaguars used a 16-0 run to take a 14-point lead and won, 92-77, tonight at Christenberry Fieldhouse in Augusta, Ga.
Through the first 27 minutes of the game the Pacers (6-15, 2-9 PBC) shot 57.8 percent (19-of-33) from the field but hit on just five-of-18 (27.7 percent) over the final 13 minutes of the game. ASU (12-10, 5-6 PBC) held a 41-25 rebounding edge, including 20 offensive rebounds, and made 21-of-30 free throws in the second half to break open the game.
Tyrekus Bowman led six Jaguars in double-figures with a game-high 21 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Cameron Tovey recorded the game's only double-double with a game-high 11 rebounds and 14 points.
Richard Blocker led USCA with 16 points.
Franchot Brown finished with 12 points and a team-high eight rebounds.
Augusta State took a one-point lead, 40-39, into the second half of play. Two free throws by Karim Telfer extended the Jaguar advantage to four, 50-46, with 15:45 remaining in the game. Back-to-back lay-ups from
Arnold Coates and Blocker put the Pacers in front, 53-51. Blocker converted the free throw after being fouled on his basket and with 12:58 to go in the game USCA was out in front 54-52.
The Pacers however connected on just one of their next eight attempts from the field and Telfer scored 10 of his 19 points during the 16-0 Jaguar run. Two more Telfer free throws and a Tovey lay-up capped the run and gave ASU a comfortable 68-54 lead with 7:30 left in the game.
After a Roberto Aufiero lay-up made it 75-60,
Trent Boyd and
Josh Poston sandwiched three-pointers around two more ASU free throws to draw within 11, 77-66, with 4:13 on the clock. USC Aiken forced a turnover but missed on two attempts to get within single digits and Augusta State pushed back out in front, taking its largest lead of the game, 18 points, on a free throw from Tovey with 2:18 remaining.
Boyd went three-for-three from beyond the three-point arch and finished the night with a career-best 11 points. ASU shot 60 percent (15-of-25) from the field in the second half after making just 12-of-34 (35.3 percent) in the first half. USC Aiken went 11-of-29 in the second 20 minutes of play for 37.9 percent.
USCA jumped out to an early 3-0 lead 17 seconds into the game on Boyd's first trey. After Tovey tied the game for the third time, 10-10, with two free throws at the 13:26 mark, the Pacers scored six unanswered to take their largest lead of the game, 16-10, with 12:21 to go before the break.
A Clarence Brown lay-up gave the Jaguars their largest first half advantage, five points, 28-23, with 5:35 to go. The score was tied seven times in the first 20 minutes of play and the lead exchanged hands seven times as well. The seventh lead change came on Bowman's tip-in as time expired, sending ASU to the locker room in front 40-39.
Brown was one of the six Augusta players to score in double figures, finishing with 11. Aufiero added 12 and Larry Diamond scored 11 as well.
USC Aiken was playing without senior
Curt Triplin, the squad's leading scorer and rebounder. Triplin was dismissed from the team earlier in the day by interim head coach Steve Franklin for a violation of team rules.
The Pacers will be back in action on Saturday when they host Lander University at "The Courthouse" in Aiken, S.C. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
