Box Score JACKSONVILLE, Fla.--USC Aiken trailed by 17 points with 12:30 to go in the second half, closed to within five, but couldn't get over the hump and lost to the University of North Florida, 82-75, today at UNF Arena in Jacksonville, Fla. The Pacers (6-18, 2-12 PBC) were led by
Richard Blocker's game-high 18 points. David Ashwell led six Ospreys in double figures with 14 points. With its sixth win in seven games, UNF improves to 13-15 overall and 8-6 in the PBC.
After
Josh Poston gave USC Aiken an 11-6 lead with 13:48 to go in the first half, North Florida went on a 16-2 run to take a nine-point advantage. Carl McNally's three-pointer started it for UNF and David Ashwell capped it off with a jumper at the 10:15 mark to put the Ospreys out in front 22-13. McNally scored six of his 10 points during the run.
Chris Timberlake's lay-up with 1:33 remaining in the first half extended the North Florida lead to 16 points, 40-24. Blocker's lay-in with 1:16 left finished off the first half scoring for both teams and sent the Pacers to the locker room trailing 40-26. Timberlake finished with 10 points.
USCA hit on just eight-of-29 shot attempts in the first half for 27.6 percent. UNF made 13-of-32 for 40.6 percent.
An
Arnold Coates jumper finished off a string of six unanswered Pacer points and cut the deficit to 10, 42-32, with 17:51 to go in the game. Donny Lotz answered for the Ospreys, knocking down a three-pointer to push North Florida in front by 17 points, 49-32, with 16:28 remaining. Lotz finished the game with 12 points and five rebounds.
After Earl gave UNF another 17-point lead with 14:06 left in the game, USC Aiken used a 17-6 run to draw within six points.
Marcus Robinson began the run with two free throws at the 12:29 mark to cut it to 15.
Josh Geyer scored seven of his 17 points during the run. Robinson finished with 14 points and a team-best seven rebounds.
Franchot Brown's lay-up with 8:14 left in the game had the Pacers within 61-55 and a three-pointer by Blocker cut the North Florida advantage to five points with 7:30 to go but USCA would get no closer the rest of the way.
The Ospreys shot 66.7 percent (14-of-21) in the second half and finished 27-of-53 for 50.9 percent. USC Aiken improved to 41.2 percent (14-of-34) in the second stanza but shot 34.9 percent (22-of-63) for the game. North Florida held a 46-32 rebounding advantage.
After turning the ball over 28 times against USC Upstate on Wednesday, USCA took better care of the ball against the Ospreys, finishing with only 12 turnovers.
The Pacers will be back in action on Wednesday when rival Augusta State University pays a visit to "The Courthouse" in Aiken, S.C. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
