Pacers Split With No. 24 GCSU

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga.--USC Aiken's softball team tied the school record for Peach Belt Conference victories, and earned the school's first 30-win season since 2000, after coming from behind to beat 24th ranked Georgia College & State University, 4-3, in the second game of a doubleheader last night in Milledgeville, Ga. The Lady Bobcats edged USCA 2-1 in game one.

The Lady Pacers picked up their eighth conference win of the season to tie the 1994, 1997 and 2001 squads. USC Aiken improves to 30-25 overall and 8-10 in PBC play. The Lady Bobcats move to 29-15 and 9-7 in the PBC.

After falling behind 1-0 in game two, USCA scored four unanswered runs to take a 4-1 lead. The Lady Pacers took advantage of a GC&SU error in the second inning to plate the tying run.

With two outs in the fourth inning, Meghan Lynch delivered a clutch RBI single through the left side to score Temeka Floyd. Ragen Reeves followed with a two run double to give USC Aiken a three run cushion.

The Lady Bobcats pushed across a run in the bottom of the sixth inning as Erica Usry came through with a pinch-hit RBI single to score Kristen Rutledge. GC&SU had two runners on later in the inning, but USCA pitcher Amy Fox worked out of the jam.

Jenna Kubesch cut the USC Aiken advantage to one with an RBI ground out in the bottom of the seventh. The Lady Bobcats loaded the bases in an attempt to hand the Lady Pacers another heart breaking loss, but Sarah Harvey snared a line drive off the bat of Amy Davenport to end the game and preserve the win.

Fox came on to pitch in the first inning after starter Samantha Blair was hit with a line drive. Fox gave up eight hits and two runs in six-plus innings of work to even her record on the season at 6-6. JoAnn Jones picked up her second save of the year after recording the final two outs.

Jami Cornwell went two-for-three with two runs scored for USCA. Joni Frei finished with two hits in two at bats and two runs scored for GC&SU. Kubesch went two-for-four with an RBI.

In game one, Georgia College & State scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth to break a scoreless tie. Tara Hassell's ground ball to second base was misplayed and Ashley Blanton scored easily from third for the first run of the game. Davenport's RBI single through the left side accounted for the second run of the inning.

The Lady Bobcats had a chance to blow the game open in the sixth inning with two runners on and nobody out, but Jones (12-10) retired the next three batters to keep the Lady Pacers within striking distance.

Jayme Durand's solo home run (3) over the right field wall finally got USCA on the board in the top of the seventh, but GC&SU closed the door and held on for the 2-1 win.

Kubesch (16-4) earned the win in game one after allowing just one run on four hits and striking out 10 batters over seven innings.

USC Aiken's eight conference wins this season matches the 1994 and 1997 squads that finished 8-6 in the Peach Belt Conference, and the 2001 team that posted an 8-12 league mark.

The Lady Pacers will conclude their 2004 regular season schedule on Thursday when they travel to Savannah, Ga., to face 12th ranked Armstrong Atlantic State University beginning at 2:30 p.m.
