Box Score 2 AIKEN, S.C.--USC Aiken opened J.H. Satcher Field in grand fashion by sweeping a softball doubleheader against Newberry College tonight in Aiken, S.C. The Lady Pacers won the first game on their new field, 8-0 in six innings and then came from behind to take game two, 4-3. USCA improves to 23-18 overall while Newberry falls to 18-13.
With one out in the bottom of the first inning of game one,
Jami Cornwell drove a 2-2 pitch over the left field fence, for the first hit and first home run at the Lady Pacers' new field.
Meghan Lynch drove in two more runs when she ripped a double through the infield, giving USCA a 3-0 lead.
A day after breaking the school career home run record,
Jayme Durand hit her second homer of the season in the fourth inning to extend the lead to 4-0. Lynch knocked in her third run of the game with a single in the fifth and finished two-for-three.
The Lady Pacers plated three in the bottom of the sixth to end the game.
Jennifer Scott's double to right center pushed across two runs and set the final score at 8-0.
Scott and Durand each finished with two hits in three at bats. Durand scored three runs and knocked in one.
The first pitch at J.H. Satcher by USCA's
JoAnn Jones was a called strike. The sophomore allowed just two hits, one walk and struck out two batters in six innings of work. She improved her record to 9-6 and picked up her fourth shutout of the season.
The Lady Indians grabbed the early lead in game two with a run in the first inning and another in the second. Rebecca Backman's RBI single scored the first run of the game. Julie Wideman singled in a run with two outs in the second inning to put Newberry ahead 2-0.
USC Aiken answered in the bottom of the second inning.
Deidre Simmons tied the game with a two-out, two run double to left center.
Ashley Dyches' RBI single in the bottom of the third scored Cornwell and gave the Lady Pacers the lead for good, 3-2.
With the bases loaded in the fourth inning Cornwell singled into left field to drive in what would turn out to be the game winning run.
Sarah Harvey crossed the plate to put USCA out in front 4-2.
Backman cut the deficit to one with an RBI single in the top of the sixth inning, but
Samantha Blair got Courtney Lindler to pop up to end the inning and then retired the side in order in the seventh to pick up her ninth win of the season against seven defeats. The freshman came on in relief of
Amy Fox in the third inning. Blair struck out three, walked two, allowed one run and scattered four hits over four and a third innings.
Backman finished three-for-four in game two with two RBIs.
The Lady Pacers will get back into Peach Belt Conference action on Tuesday when they host rival Augusta State University. The doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 5:00 p.m., at J.H. Satcher Field.
