Keown Becomes First Ever In PBC To Steal 50

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 AIKEN, SC--The USC Aiken Pacers (30-23, 13-15 PBC) rolled to a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader sweep of UNC Pembroke (23-23, 8-18 PBC) 16-4 and 6-0 on Saturday afternoon at J.H. Satcher Field.  With the two wins, the Pacers reached the 30-win plateau for the third-straight season under head coach Kenny Thomas, the first time USCA has accomplished that feat since 1994-96.

Clint Keown had a career day playing in his final games this weekend in a Pacer uniform.  The 6-2 senior from Evansville, IN combined to steal six bases, score six runs, and drive in one more going 6-for-10 at the plate.  In addition, Keown had an unofficial record of three outfield assists in game one and one more in the nightcap.  Three of the four assists were Keown throwing out runners trying to score.

With the six steals on the day, Keown became the first player in PBC history to steal 50 bases in one season.  Already the school single season and career record holder, Keown passed JuJu
Foreman
of Augusta State for the single season record (49) and Francis Marion's Brad Beatson's career mark (84).  Keown now has 51 stolen bases this season and 86 in his career.

In game one, the Pacers tied a season-best with 21 hits in plating 16 runs to cruise to the 16-4 win.

Demetrick Drumming had an RBI single in the first to score Keown and then Tony Hanks (13) crushed a two-run blast to left field to make it 3-0 Pacers after one.  Drumming was 2-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI.  Keown went 4-for-6 with four runs scored while Hanks was 1-for-5 with two RBI.

Ashley Farr had a two-RBI single to cap a five-run third inning that ballooned the lead to 11-2.  Farr was 3-for-5 with four RBI.  Casey Calhoun also had a big game at the plate going 4-for-5 while Justin Williams was 2-for-4 and Leroy Walker was 3-for-3.  Mike Rosswas 1-for-3 but scored three runs.  As a team, every Pacer in the lineup had a hit by the middle of the third inning.

USC Aiken tacked on one more in the fourth, two in the fifth, and two in the eighth to push the advantage to 16-2.  Bryan Graham'stwo-out, two-run homer in the ninth set the final margin at 16-4.  Graham finished 2-for-4.  Matt Scott was 2-for-3 with two RBI for the Braves while Adam Beaver went 3-for-4 at the plate.

Wes McColl (8-5) tossed his seventh complete game of the season, one shy of the school record, scattering 12 hits and two walks while striking out five.  He allowed four runs, all earned, in notching his eighth win of the season.

Eric Stewart (3-7) survived 2.1 innings allowing nine earned runs on nine hits and one walk in the loss.  Josh Benton worked the final 5.2 innings giving up seven runs, six earned, on 12 hits and three walks, striking out four.

In game two, the Pacers got another complete game on the mound, this time from freshman Nick Wandless.  The 6-1 freshman right-hander from Evans, GA tossed his first career complete game shutout in just his fifth career start.  A staple out of Thomas' bullpen this season, Wandless tied Lee Cromer (2002) and Chris Quarles' (2001) school record with his 29th appearance of the season.  In 7.0 innings, Wandless (6-2) allowed four hits and one walk, striking out seven, lowering his ERA to 2.97.

Brent Hitz (6-2) also went the distance for UNC Pembroke surrendering six earned runs on eight hits and four walks, striking out seven in the loss.

USC Aiken got on the board in the bottom of the third on a Bradley Key double to right center plating Keown and Farr to make it 2-0. Key led the Pacers in game two going 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI.  Drumming and Calhoun also had two hits a piece for the Pacers.

In the fourth, with one on and one out, Walker (6) stroked one over the left field fence to make it 4-0.  Drumming added a two-RBI double to set the final margin at 6-0.
