Box Score 3 SAVANNAH, GA--USC Aiken (21-17, 6-11 PBC) dropped the rubber match of a Peach Belt Conference baseball series with the ninth-ranked Armstrong Atlantic State Pirates (23-7, 8-4 PBC) 11-5 on a soggy Sunday afternoon in Savannah, GA. The two teams split Saturday's twin bill with the Pirates taking game one 11-3 and the Pacers pulling out the win 5-1 in 12 innings in the nightcap.
For the three game conference series,
Ashley Farr led USCA batting .583 with four doubles, one triple, and three RBI, slugging 1.083.
Clint Keown also hit well batting .429 while
Demetrick Drumming posted a .385 and had the team's only homer of the weekend.
On the mound,
Mike Pomaville held AASU to two hits in 7.0 innings of relief work.
Bradley Key also performed well in 5.0 innings of work, he surrendered one hit, with neither hurler allowing an earned run.
In game three on Sunday, the Pacers claimed an early 1-0 lead in the first when
Key grounded out to bring home Drumming. The Pirates, however, swung the sticks well on Sunday posting two runs in the first, third, fourth, fifth, and seventh innings. As a team, AASU pounded out 13 hits and capitalized on four Pacer errors.
Drumming was a perfect 4-for-4 on the day with three RBI and two runs scored highlighted by a two-run blast in the seventh to trim the margin to 8-5.
Farr was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and
Tony Hanks added a 2-for-4 outing for the Pacers.
On the mound,
Nick Wandless (3-1) suffered his first collegiate loss going 3.2 innings allowing six runs, three earned, on nine hits.
Paul Ferrell and
Harold Sofield worked in relief.
Jeremy Olson (5-3) picked up the win for AASU giving up five runs, four earned, on nine hits and one walk.
Matt Stephens provided the offensive punch for the Pirates with a 3-for-4 day including a two-run homer in the fifth inning.
In game one on Saturday, a six-run seventh inning proved to be the difference in the ballgame as the Pacers fell 11-3.
USCA plated two in the fifth as
Keown scored off an RBI double by
Farr and then
Farr came around to score on an error to make it 3-1.
???????AASU pushed three across in the bottom of the inning, however, two coming on a
Chris Boaen single through the right side to make it 4-3. It stayed that way until the seventh, when the Pirates plated six runs on fourth hits and one Pacer error keyed by a bases loaded double to right center by
Brandon McKinnon scoring three.
Wes McColl (5-4) picked up the loss for the Pacers surrendering five earned runs on eight hits.
Jon Dobyns (7-1) allowed two earned runs on seven hits, striking out eight in the win for AASU.
In the nightcap, it took a big 12th inning, but the Pacers pushed across four runs on five hits to steal game two 5-1.
Key tossed 5.0 innings of one-hit baseball, walking three and striking out three in the no decision.
Pomaville (5-4) came on in relief in the sixth and threw the final 7.0 innings, allowing one unearned run on two hits, issuing no walks and striking out six in the win.
Farr doubled in
Keown for the game's first run in the first inning. But AASU scored the equalizer in the sixth as
Stacy Bennett scored on a Pacer error. Pitching and defense dominated until the 12th when
Hanks led off with a single and
Mike Ross punched a one-out single to center to plate
Hanks for the go ahead run. For good measure, the Pacers tacked on three more including an RBI triple by
Farr and an RBI single by
Key.
USC Aiken returns home to Aiken, SC to host Presbyterian College in a non-conference tilt on Wednesday, April 2 at 6:30 PM.
