Box Score AIKEN, SC--USC Aiken fell to Barton College, 18-9, tonight at J.H. Satcher Field in Aiken, S.C.
Tony Hanks went three-for-five for the Pacers including two home runs, two runs scored and five RBIs. Barton College was led by Brock Godwin, who had three hits in five at bats, including a home run, with four runs scored and three RBIs. USCA falls to 15-14 on the season while the Bulldogs improve to 17-10 overall.
Barton jumped out ahead early with six runs in the first and five more in the second. Justin Wilkes and Dennis Blackmon each had RBI singles in the first inning. A bases loaded walk by
Mike Pomaville to Tyler Petty and a passed ball scored two more runs. Sean Latimer capped the inning with a single through the right sided that plated two more Bulldog runners.
Petty's two out three run home run to left field highlighted the second inning for Barton College and put the Bulldogs in front 11-0 after just two innings.
Pomaville lasted an inning and a third for USCA. The junior allowed nine runs, five of which were earned, on seven hits and walked one batter on his way to dropping to 3-4 on the season.
Godwin's home run came in the top of the third with a runner on base. Blackmon had another RBI single in the inning as well and after two and a half innings the Pacers were in a 14-0 hole.
From the third inning on, USC Aiken outscored the Bulldogs 9-7. Hanks' two out single in the bottom of the third drove in two runs and got the Pacers on the board.
Bradley Key followed with a base knock through the left side to score
Brandon Beaulieu and cut the Barton lead to 14-3.
After the Bulldogs plated two more runs in the top of the fourth, Peach Belt Conference Player of the Week
Ashley Farr answered in the bottom of the inning with his ninth home run of
the season.
Farr's blast over the right field wall came with a runner on base and set the score at 16-5.
Barton scored for the fifth consecutive inning with two more runs in the top half of the fifth. The Bulldogs would go scoreless over the final four innings.
Farr picked up another RBI on a double down the right field line in the sixth and
Hanks belted his first home run of the night over the left field fence in the seventh to draw the Pacers to within 18-7.
Farr finished with three hits in five at bats, two runs scored and three RBIs.
USCA tried to continue the rally in the bottom of the ninth.
Mike Cunningham singled to lead off the inning and
Hanks sent another pitch out of J.H. Satcher Field, this time to left center, to close the gap to nine, 18-9. USC Aiken would get no closer as Kevin Dunn retired the next three batters in order to end the game.
Scott McIver picked up his fourth win of the season against three defeats for the Bulldogs. McIver pitched six innings, gave up 10 hits, six runs and three walks.
The Pacers return to action tomorrow for the beginning of a two-game series with West Virginia Tech. The first pitch at J.H. Satcher Field on the USC Aiken campus is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
