Box Score 2 AIKEN, SC--A dominating pitching performance in game one and some last at bat heroics in game two provided the USC Aiken Pacers (8-6, 3-3 PBC) with a Peach Belt Conference baseball doubleheader sweep over the 26th ranked Lander Senators (10-5, 2-3 PBC) on Sunday afternoon at J.H. Satcher Field. USCA won game one 9-0 and took game two 7-6 in eight innings. The Pacers picked up the series sweep of the Senators and have won eight-straight in the overall series.
Wes McColl (2-1) dominated the Lander lineup in the first game of the afternoon. He scattered four hits in the complete game shutout, striking out eight and walking two for his second win in three decisions.
Ashley Farr provided the offensive punch going 4-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored.
Clint Keown,
Demetrick Drumming, and
Mike Ross each had two hits for the Pacers who pounded out 41 in the three game series.
Farr had an RBI single in the first,
Bradley Key recorded an RBI groundout, and
Mike Cunningham a sacrifice fly as the Pacers jumped on starter
Nick Powell with three runs in the first inning.
Powell (1-1) lasted just 1.1 innings allowing six runs, five earned, on six hits and one walk while not recording a strikeout.
USCA added three more in the second.
Farr singled up the middle to plate
Keown and
Ross and later scored on a throwing error by second baseman
Jeremy Ryals to make it 6-0.
Justin Williams singled home
Key and
Hanks in the sixth inning to increase the lead to 8-0 and
Casey Calhoun tacked on an unearned run in the eighth to set the final margin at 9-0.
Mark Ray,
Corey Watkins, and
Patrick Hakey combined to work the final 6.2 innings for Lander allowing three runs, two earned, on 10 hits and two walks while striking out five.
In game two, USCA blew a 5-3 lead in the top of the sixth inning only to come back and tie the game in the bottom of the seventh and win it in the eighth.
Down 6-5 in the seventh,
Hanks and
Key were retired bringing the Pacers to their final out.
Cunningham singled to right center.
Williams singled right field and then
Walker singled to score
Chris Sheehan, who was pinch running for
Cunningham, to tie the game and force extra innings.
After
Paul Ferrell (1-1) got the Senators to go quietly in the top of the eighth,
Keown singled to lead off the bottom of the inning.
Farrwas intentionally walked and then
Drumming drew a walk to load the bases for
Hanks. With the infield in,
Hanks crushed a shot over the center fielder's head for a walk-off RBI single and the Pacers won 7-6.
Harold Sofield tossed 5.2 innings of solid work surrendering six earned runs on eight hits and three walks, striking out two.
Nick Wandless came on in the sixth to help get
Sofield and Pacers out of a jam and was credited with 1.1 innings of work, not allowing a run on two hits.
David Wilson went 3.2 innings for the Senators giving up five runs, three earned, on seven hits, striking out four in the no decision.
Jeremy Ray (1-1) allowed two runs, one earned, on eight hits and two walks in 3.1 innings of work in the loss.

Cunningham went 3-for-4 to lead the Pacers while
Ross drive in a team best three runs.
James Scrubbs was 2-for-4 to lead Lander including an RBI triple in the second inning as Lander took the early 2-0 advantage.
USC Aiken, winners of four straight, will put their 8-2 home record on the line on Tuesday, February 25 when they welcome Milligan College for a non-conference tilt starting at 6:00 PM.
