Leroy Walker delivered a one-out RBI double off the right center field wall in the bottom of the ninth to plate
Chris Sheehan and give the USC Aiken Pacers (6-6, 1-3 PBC) a big 4-3 win over 26th ranked Lander (10-3, 2-1 PBC) in Peach Belt Conference baseball Saturday afternoon at J.H. Satcher Field. The Pacers notched their first conference win of the young season while snapping the Senators four-game winning streak.
Lander got on the board first in the top of the second on an RBI double by
Jeremy Ryals. The Pacers countered in the bottom of the third, however, to knot the game at 1-1.
Walker reached on an error and then advanced to third on
Adam Strongman's single. With one out,
Ashley Farr recorded an RBI groundout to score
Walker.
After the Senators recaptured the lead in the fourth when
Jeff Whitfield's double plated
James Scrubbs, the Pacers responded with two in the sixth.
Demetrick Drumming singled with one out, and then with two away, All-American
Ashley Farr (2) blasted a two-run shot to straight away center field to give the Pacers the 3-2 lead.
Mike Pomaville tossed 7.0 innings, giving up two earned runs on eight hits and two walks, striking out four in the no decision.
Nick Wandless (2-0) came on in the eighth and surrendered one run on one hit, striking out three for the win.
Down to their final three outs, designated hitter
Juan Adriatico homered off
Wandless to lead off the ninth inning.
Wandless would get the next three batters in order, but the Pacers would need its last at bat.
Ben Howerton (2-2) turned in a strong outing for Lander. He scattered 10 hits over 8.1 innings allowing four runs, three earned, striking out six and walking one.
The one walk, however, proved costly to
Howerton. It was issued to
Mike Cunningham to lead off the bottom of the ninth.
Sheehanwas then inserted into the lineup to pinch run for
Cunningham.
Justin Williams' sacrifice bunt moved
Sheehan to second and
Walker delivered the game winning double.
Not to be forgotten was
Walker's defense. In the top of the seventh and leading 3-2,
Walker gunned down Adriatico at the plate on a
Ryan Roeder's single to save a run and end the inning.
Drumming,
Walker, and
Bradley Key each went 2-for-4 to lead the Pacers while
Adriatico,
Scrubbs, and
Whitfield pounded out two hits each to pace the Senators.
