AIKEN, S.C. - University of South Carolina Aiken volleyball standout Rebecca Martinez has been named the South Carolina Education Lottery USC Aiken Student-Athlete of the Month for October.
Martinez, a 5-5 libero from Wellington, Fla., guided the Pacers to a 10-1 record in October.
In 35 sets, she accounted for 272 digs, which was good enough for 7.77 digs per set. Martinez dished out 40 assists in the month and served up eight aces.
On Oct. 5 against Lander, Martinez tied the school record for digs in a four-set match. She later tied that mark on Oct. 14 against Carson-Newman. She posted 31 digs against Mars Hill on Oct. 13, marking the second-most digs in a three-set match.
During the month of October, Martinez posted two of the top-10 overall dig performances in school history.
She currently leads the league in digs per set and is fourth nationally. Martinez is second in overall digs in the league.
The South Carolina Education Lottery USC Aiken Athletic Department Student-Athlete of the Month award honors one student-athlete each month from an in-season sport for their hard work and effort. Each month during the 2017-18 athletic year one winner will be chosen from an in-season sport.
