Sitting at 1-1 in the PBC on Oct. 4, head coach
Glenn Cox's team made the trek to Greenwood, S.C., to face Lander in the first road league match-up of the season.
Squaring off against the Bearcats in a frenzied environment, USCA embarked on a 5-0 spurt to take a 15-12 lead in the opening set. The back-and-forth affair saw Lander knot the score at 23-23 before
Bailey Corrigan slammed home a pass from
Sidney Hogan for a one-point edge. An attack error by the home team propelled USCA to a 25-23 win.
Cox's squad jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the second stanza thanks in part to a kill from
Anna Sommer and a block from
Alli Bishop and Sommer. Leading 16-10, an error by the Bearcats started a 6-0 spurt by USCA. The run had a point from Bishop, an ace from Hogan and a kill and a block from Sommer, who finished off the frame with a kill for the 25-12 win.
Dwon 14-9 in the third set, three errors by Lander and points from Bishop and Corrigan knotted the score at 14-14. Tied at 21-21, a service error gave the Pacers the serve. Corrigan had a kill while Sommer finished the match with a block and then a kill for the sweep.
The balanced attack saw Bishop post eight kills while Corrigan and Sommer had seven each. Hogan dished out 18 assists. Sommer notched six total blocks while
Kira Bostick tallied 13 digs.
