Box Score AIKEN, SC--The USC Aiken Pacers (35-18) won its regular season home finale over NAIA opponent Brewton-Parker on Tuesday evening at J.H. Satcher Field. With the victory, USCA wins its 35th game, the most since going 35-22 in 1994.
The Barons (17-31-1) opened the game with a pair of runs in the first inning. Pacer hurler
Adam Green walked the bases loaded and then
Dax Mezo lined a single to left field scoring two runs. Pacer catcher
Sean Tiernan threw out
Denson Gleaton at third base to end the inning.
Brewton-Parker posted two more runs in the third to take an early 4-0 lead on the Pacers. A pair of RBI singles gave the Barons a surprising lead midway through three innings.
However, USCA found a way to get to starting pitcher
Chip Williams in the third inning as
Ashley Morgan blasted a two-run homer to center field to cut the deficit in half. The Pacers cut the deficit to one run in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly by
Leroy Williams, courtesy of an
Ashley Farr double.
Brewton-Parker went to its bullpen in the bottom of the fifth. That was a mistake. In the fifth and sixth innings, USCA scored ten runs on nine hits.
In the fifth, the Barons brought in
Jared Waggoner who only lasted one and one-third innings, allowing six hits, seven runs, six earned and one walk. A three-run triple by
Farr did the damage in the fifth.
A three-run blast by
Bradley Key in the sixth gave USCA a 13-5 lead through six innings. Brewton-Parker scored two more runs in the ninth to cut the score to 13-7.
For the game,
Lee Cromer (4-0) picks up the win in relief of
Green. He went two innings, two hits, one earned run and one strikeout. Baron reliever
Waggoner picks up the loss.
Farr finished the game 2-for-3, a double, a triple and three RBI.
Key was 2-of-5, a home run and four RBI.
USCA concludes the 2002 season this weekend with a three-game series at UNC Pembroke, beginning on Saturday.
