MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The No. 50 University of South Carolina Aiken softball team lost a 5-4 decision at Montevallo Saturday afternoon.
The Pacers are now 13-7 on the season, including a 5-6 mark against league foes. The Falcons improve to 13-9 on the year and 2-9 against conference competition.
USC Aiken fell behind 2-1 after doubles play. Head coach Steve Dahm's team garnered a victory at the No. 1 doubles position, but came up short at No. 2 and No. 3. The top-seeded tandem of Nadine Tusiama and Olivera Veskovac notched an 8-2 win. Third-seeded Kayla Calvert and Victoria Giannaccini lost an 8-5 decision.
Dahm's squad managed to tie the contest at 4-4 after claiming three of the first five singles matches. Calvert picked up a 6-1, 6-0 victory at the No. 3 spot. Giannaccini, playing at the No. 4 position, bested her competition 7-6 (9-7) 6-3.
Marie Habiyaremye tallied a 6-1, 7-6 (8-6) win at the No. 5 spot.
The last match came down to the No. 2 slot. Veskovac nearly pulled off the victory but was narrowly defeated. She lost the first set 7-6 (9-7) before rebounding for a 6-4 win in the second stanza. However, Veskovac dropped the third set 6-3.
The Pacers return to action tomorrow when they play at Clayton State in the regular-season finale. The match is slated to start at 2 p.m.
