AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken men's and women's tennis teams picked up identical 6-3 victories over visiting Pfeiffer on Saturday afternoon at the USC Aiken Tennis Complex.
The USC Aiken women via their 6-3 win over Pfeiffer improved to 5-5 on the 2011 season. Pfeiffer with the loss to USC Aiken dropped to 2-3 on the year.
The nationally 25th-ranked USC Aiken men moved to an even 4-4 on the year with its 6-3 victory over Pfeiffer. The Pacer win gave Pfeiffer its first loss of the 2011 spring season. They are now 3-1.
The women's match was won at doubles with the Pacers sweeping all three doubles matches to start the day.
The Pacers and Falcons were even in singles play, but the three doubles points led the Pacers to the 6-3 win.
USC Aiken's most dominant win of the day came at No. 2 singles with Margot Simon (Nantes, France/St. Joseph de Loquidy) downing Pfeiffer's Catie Thomas 6-0, 6-0.
Andrea Cediel (Cali, Colombia/Cypress Bay High School) won 6-2, 6-1 over Pfeiffer's Chelsi Haefele at No. 4 singles, while Caitlyn Lawrence (Barrie, Ontario /Barrie North Collegiate) managed an easy 6-1, 6-1 victory over Pfeiffer's Kayleigh Featherstone at No. 6 singles.
In the men's match, USC Aiken entered singles action owning a 2-1 lead. The Pacers earned wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles with the nationally 14th-ranked tandem of Gregory Andrade (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Unigrade Valinhos) and Bruno Orlandini (Araraquara, SP/Brazil/Longwood) besting Pfeiffer's Phillip Lawson and Johan de Wit 8-3 at No. 1 doubles.
The duo of Lucas Gobbi (Santa Bárbara d'Oeste, Brazil/Colegio Politec) and Juan Guglielmeti (Mar del Plata, Argentina/Instituto Albert Einstein) earned an 8-3 victory over Pfeiffer's Ben Hunter and Stephen Tyndel at No. 3 doubles.
USC Aiken earned four of its six points in singles to take the overall 6-3 victory.
Gobbi collected the most dominating Pacer victory in singles with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Pfeiffer's Hunter at No. 4 singles.
The USC Aiken men will next welcome Erskine to the USC Aiken Tennis Complex for a 2:30 p.m. match on Wednesday, March 2.
The Pacer women will next travel to Montevallo, Ala. for a Peach Belt Conference match against Montevallo at 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 5.
