MISENHEIMER, N.C. - The USC Aiken women's tennis team split with homestanding Pfeiffer in singles, but earning one win in doubles led to a 5-4 loss to the Falcons at the Knapp Tennis Center.
The loss was the first of the year for the Pacers, who are now 2-1 on the 2010 spring season. Pfeiffer stayed perfect on the year at 2-0 with the early season victory over the Pacers.
The Pacers picked up their lone doubles victory in No. 2 doubles with the Pacer tandem of Stephanie Humphrey and Maria Angel downing Pfeiffer's duo of Maddy Billeter and Jonnell Carpenter by an 8-3 score.
The Pacers claimed a singles victory at the No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 singles flights. Angel (Rosario, Argentina) acquired a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Billeter at No. 3 singles, while Brittany Telford (Newmarket, Canada) collected a win over Pfeiffer's Catie Thomas 6-3, 7-5 at No. 4 singles. In the fifth singles flight, USC Aiken's Bridgette Gale (St. Augustine, Fla.) earned a hard-fought 7-6 (8-6), 6-1 win over Carpenter at the fifth singles flight.
On Saturday, Feb. 20, USC Aiken will travel to St. Augustine, Fla. to take on league rival Flagler at 11 a.m. The 17th-ranked Pacer men will be playing the 34th-ranked Flagler men, while the Pacer women will be dueling with women's No. 46 Flagler.
USC Aiken's week concludes on Sunday with an extremely tough double dip.
The USC Aiken men and women will open the day by taking on Peach Belt Conference foe and men's and women's national No. 1 Armstrong Atlantic State at 10 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 21.
The same day, USC Aiken will stay in Savannah to tangle with one of the top NAIA programs in men's and women's tennis. The NCAA Division II 17th-ranked USC Aiken men will be playing the NAIA 19th-ranked Savannah College of Art and Design, while the Pacer women will be taking the court against the NAIA No. 9 SCAD women. The action is scheduled to get underway at 3:30 p.m.
