Box Score AIKEN, S.C. - For the second consecutive match
Troy Watson hit the match-winner from over 35 yards out and the USC Aiken men's soccer team picked up an important 4-3 victory over regionally-ranked Carson-Newman at the "Pacer Pit."
Watson's blast on Saturday is one that those in attendance will be talking about for a long time as he hit a rocket from 45 yards out that nicked off the crossbar and hit just inside the line for the go-ahead goal in the 83
rd-minute.
The goal was Watson's second of the match and his fifth of the 2009 season.
The cracker by the two-time and reigning Peach Belt Conference Player of the Week would turn out to be all that the Pacers would need as the contest was called due to heavy inclement weather in the area just over three minutes later.
The Pacers arrived on the scoreboard early in the match when
Fernando Gamez-Noriega (Sinaloa, Mexico/Colleton County) obtained the first of his two goals on the night when he opportunistically took control of a loose ball in the box after a
Brett Van Pelt (Aiken, S.C./South Aiken) shot. Gamez-Noriega calmly boomed the ball into the back of the net with just over four minutes taken off the game clock.
Gamez-Noriega put the Pacers ahead 2-0 in the 43
rd-minute when he hit a rifle from 35 yards out that went past Carson-Newman goalkeeper Jordan Moore.
The Eagles (3-2-1) would put themselves back into the contest at 2-1 just over a minute later when a free kick cross from Richard Marquetty found the head of Robert Hill at the 43:53 mark.
The second half opened with Carson-Newman seemingly taking momentum in the match with Matthew Findlay putting in a penalty kick just under 10 minutes into the second stanza.
Watson (Kingston, Jamaica/Montreat) made sure that the Pacers would take the lead once again at the 63:39 mark when he stole the ball about 25 yards out of goal from the Eagle defense and then easily lifted the ball into the right of the net for a 3-2 USC Aiken lead.
Finlay then tied the game at 3-3 at the 65:31 mark before Watson and USC Aiken took advantage for good on Watson's goal at the 82:57 mark.
???????USC Aiken is now 4-3 on the 2009 season. The Pacers enter their non-conference tilt with Newberry at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 30 having won four of their last five matches.
