Pacers Collect One of Biggest Wins in Program History With 7-0 Domination of Catawba

Box Score AIKEN, S.C. - Seven different players found the back of the net and reigning USC Aiken Athletic Department Student-Athlete of the Week Fernando Gamez-Noriega finished with three assists as the Pacers collected one of the biggest wins in program history with a 7-0 win over Catawba at the "Pacer Pit."

The victory is the third-largest in school history, marking the third time in school history that the Pacers have ended a match with a 7-0 win. USC Aiken also downed Anderson 7-0 in 2001 and North Georgia 7-0 in 1994.

The largest Pacer victory ever came in 2002 when USC Aiken bested Catawba's fellow South Atlantic Conference member institution Newberry 10-0 at the "Pacer Pit" on Friday, Sept. 27, 2002. USC Aiken's second largest victory came in 2007 in an 8-0 win over Chowan at home on Sept. 15, 2007.

Gamez-Noriega (Sinaloa, Mexico/Colleton County) also scored once in the domination of Catawba to finish the match with five total points on the three assists and one goal. He now has a team-leading nine points in 2009.

???????Gamez-Noriega entered Monday's match tied with Troy Watson (Kingston, Jamaica/Montreat) for the team lead in total points with four.

Watson concluded the win over Catawba with one goal and one assist to enter USC Aiken's next match with seven total points. Watson leads the Pacers with five assists on the year.

Scoreless on the year entering the match, Watson got things rolling for USC Aiken in the match when he scored on a beautiful ball over the top of the Indian defense in the 27th-minute. Gamez-Noriega played the ball to Watson, who then deftly placed into the back of the net.

The floodgates opened from there with Corey Adamson (Clearwater, Fla./Clearwater) scoring his first netter of the year just over two minutes later to give the Pacers a 7-0 lead. Adamson made the goal happen himself when he opportunistically took the ball from a Catawba defender in the box and then went forward for an easy goal.

???????Gamez-Noriega and Watson connected once again next on a neat give-and-go that ended with Gamez-Noriega belting the soccer ball into the back of the net past Catawba goalkeeper Tyler Held.

The score 3-0, freshman Scott Newby (Leicestershire, UK/Wreake Valley) became the first of three Pacers to score their inaugural Pacer netter in the match at the 43:47 mark when he collected a ball over top of the defense from Gamez-Noriega and then calmly placed into the back of the net.

The goal by Newby was the fourth and final of the first half for USC Aiken, who outshot Catawba 11-2 in the first stanza.

The break at intermission did not slow down the Pacers by any means as they came out firing in the second half.

Senior James Chidsey (Rome, Ga./Rome High School) picked up his first career goal in the 52nd-minute to give USC Aiken the 5-0 advantage. Chidsey put in a rebound from a shot from fellow senior
Alex Lewis (Tampa, Fla./Shorecrest).

Just under four minutes later it was 6-0 in favor of the Pacers as freshman forward Brett Van Pelt (Aiken, S.C/South Aiken) hit a one-timer in the box on an assist from Gamez-Noriega for his second goal of the 2009 campaign.

USC Aiken scored its seventh and final goal in the 83rd-minute when freshman Patrick Sykes (Lexington, S.C./White Knoll) acquired a loose ball in the box and then slammed the ball into the net for his first career goal.

In total, USC Aiken finished the game with 22 shots compared to Catawba's nine. The Pacer goalkeepers were forced into just one save.

The offensive onslaught made it hard to notice the shutout acquired by the goalkeeping tandem of Andray Charles (Grenada, West Indies/Presentation Brother's) and Devin Lemaire (Evans, Ga./Greenbrier High School), but the two helped the Pacers collect their second straight shutout victory in three days.

The Pacers have now outscored their opposition 8-0 in their last two outings to enter their next match with an even 2-2 mark on the year.

Though perfect in its first two games of an incredible four matches in seven days stretch, USC Aiken hits the road next for a 4 p.m. game against in-state foe and regionally-ranked Limestone in Gaffney, S.C.

???????USC Aiken will finish its tough stretch with a 1 p.m. contest against Mars Hill in Mars Hill, N.C. on Saturday, Sept. 19. The Pacers and Lions will be tangling for the first time since USC Aiken took a 4-3 victory over the Lions to begin the 1999 season on Aug. 28, 1999.
