Hurricanes Hand Pacers Fifth Straight PBC Loss

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 AMERICUS, Ga.--Georgia Southwestern (11-17, 5-9 PBC) used a five-run fourth inning in game one and held off a last at-bat rally by 16th-ranked USC Aiken (25-11, 11-6 PB) in game two to sweep a Peach Belt Conference baseball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Hurricane Field. Georgia Southwestern won game one 8-4 and took the nightcap 5-4. The Pacers have dropped five-straight conference contests, their longest such streak since late in the 2005 season.

In game one, the Pacers took a 2-1 lead into the fourth inning, but five hits and two errors led to five Hurricane runs as Georgia Southwestern grabbed the 6-2 lead. Jordan Mullis and Tommy Rice each drove in two RBI in the inning.

Josh Eachues singled in Chad Jacobsen in the fifth to pull the Pacers within 6-3, but Clayton Trenary and Rusty James drew free bases with the bases loaded to make it 8-3. Carlos Height had the lone multiple-hit game for the Hurricanes.

Chris Sheehan, Ken Raborn, and Eachues tallied two hits a piece to lead the Pacer attack. USC Aiken lost for just the fourth time in 25 games where they have out-hit their opponents, but the Pacers committed four errors leading to five unearned runs and stranded 10 men on base.

Scott Wandless (6-1) had his string of 16-straight wins snapped as he suffered the loss. Wandless allowed eight runs, three earned, on eight hits and four walks, fanning four in 8.0 innings.

Brian Gartley (4-2) worked 8.0 innings giving up three runs, two earned, on eight hits and four walks in the win.

In game two, the Pacers seized the early 2-0 advantage after a Raborn single plated Sheehan.

Shane Newmans' RBI single in the third, however, drove in two Hurricane runs as Georgia Southwestern went on top 3-2. In the fifth, Newmans and Height each drove in a run to extend the lead to 5-2.

In the top of the seventh, however, the Pacers mounted a rally. With two on and one out, Jacobsen doubled to push across a pair of runs and pull USC Aiken within one run of tying the game, 5-4. James Wilson came on in relief and fanned the final two hitters to end the game.

Ben Tankersley went 2-for-4 for USC Aiken while Newmans and Height each finished 3-for-3 with a combined four RBI and two runs scored for Georgia Southwestern.

Austin Smith (4-3) notched the win after tossing 6.1 innings allowing four earned runs on eight hits and two walks.

Jon Paul (5-4) suffered the setback for the Pacers, surrendering five earned runs on nine hits and one walk, fanning five in 6.0 innings of work.

USC Aiken and Georgia Southwestern will conclude their three-game series tomorrow at 1:00 PM.
