Quick Start Leads Pacers

Box Score AIKEN, S.C.--USC Aiken (18-6) roughed up starter Shane Suter for five runs on seven hits in the first two innings to grab a 5-0 lead and hold on for the 5-3 win over Limestone College (15-14) in non-conference baseball action on Wednesday evening at Roberto Hernandez Stadium. The Pacers have won five-straight against the Saints to improve to 12-4 all-time in the series.

After singles by Darryl Pui and Ben Tankersley set up runners on the corners with one out in the first inning, Chris Sheehan smacked an RBI double that one-hopped the wall in left center, plating two runs. Ken Raborn singled up the middle to move Sheehan to third and Josh Eachues' RBI groundout to second made it 3-0 Pacers.

Pui finished 2-for-4 with one RBI and two runs scored while Tankersley had a 3-for-4 evening. Sheehan, Eachues, and Chad Jacobsen each drove in runs for USCA.

Zach Cooper began the second inning with a lead-off single through the right side of the infield and would later score on a Pui double down the left field line. Jacobsen tacked on a sacrifice fly in the inning to extend the score to 5-0.

Heading into the top of the ninth, it remained a 5-1 lead for the Pacers, but Limestone rallied, registering four hits and a hit batter in the final frame to plate two. Tyler Midgett (6) blasted his sixth homer of the season off Gary Lee with one out and one on, moving Limestone within 5-3. With the bases loaded, Lee got Paul Irby to foul out to Jacobsen at first base on a 3-2 pitch.

Jonathan Bolt (3-0) tossed 7.0 innings of four-hit baseball holding the Saints to one earned run on two walks and four strikeouts in the win. Bolt threw 60 of his 97 pitches for strikes.

Suter (1-1) suffered the loss for Limestone allowing five earned runs on seven hits in 2.0 innings of work. Five Saint hurlers, however, combined to shut down the Pacer bats over the final 6.0 innings, holding USCA to no runs on two hits and no walks.

Matt Craig finished 2-for-4 for Limestone while Midgett was 1-for-2 with two RBI and two walks.

USC Aiken will hit the road this weekend for a key Peach Belt Conference showdown at #24 Francis Marion in Florence, S.C. Saturday's doubleheader begins at 1:00 PM. Limestone returns home to Gaffney, S.C. to host Pfeiffer in a CVAC twinbill, also on Saturday, beginning at 12:00 PM.
