Pacers Bombard Bearcats

Box Score AIKEN, S.C.--It was worth the wait for Pacer fans Sunday afternoon at Roberto Hernandez. After heavy rain delayed the start of their Peach Belt Conference series finale for three hours, USC Aiken (11-3, 6-0 PBC) racked up 18 hits and stayed undefeated in PBC play with a 15-4 win over visiting Lander (3-10, 0-6). Senior Chris Sheehan went 4-for-5 at the plate as 11 different Pacers collected at least one hit, and the hosts won game three of the series with the Bearcats.

Sophomore Beau Hill (4-0), who gave up just one hit last Sunday in a win over North Georgia, was not quite as dominant this time around but pitched effectively enough for USC Aiken. The right-hander scattered nine hits over 7.2 innings, giving up four runs, three earned, while striking out four and picking off two.

It was the Pacer bats that were the story, especially Sheehan. The senior designated hitter got the offense going in the first inning with an RBI double off the center field wall that scored leadoff hitter Darryl Pui, who reached base in the first for the third time in the series.

After USCA added an unearned run in the third, Lander finally got on the board in the top of the fifth. A well-hit double and a triple plated one run and, after an error, a two-out RBI single tied the score at 2-2.

The Pacers did not take long to regain the lead. Two walks and a single by Sheehan loaded the bases with no outs before a sacrifice fly by Ken Raborn scored a run. After Lander starter Derek Wilson got the second out on a strikeout, the Bearcats defense faltered. The next two hitters reached on errors, which plated two more runs and lifted Wilson from the game. Pui then greeted reliever Justin Altman with a two-RBI double for an 8-2 USCA lead.

USCA added three more runs in the sixth as another error led to two more unearned runs. Marc Joehnk had an RBI double and Brad Johnson had an RBI single in the inning. The Pacers added two more in both the seventh and eight innings.

Hill left with two outs and two runners on in the eighth after giving up two runs, but Ryan Mitchell came in and got T.J. Guinan to ground out to Joehnk to end the inning. Mitchell also worked a scoreless ninth to close out the game.

Along with Sheehan's four hits, Pui, Raborn, Joehnk, and Johnson all had two hits apiece. Eleven Pacers collected hits, nine scored at least one run, and nine drove in a run while Pui was the only player with two RBI.

Sheehan had a tremendous series, going 7-for-11 with four runs scored, four RBI and his fifth home run of the season.

USC Aiken will return to action on Tuesday evening at 6:00 PM when they host Presbyterian College for a lone non-conference game.
