Box Score 2 AIKEN, S.C.--For the first time this season, USC Aiken dropped two straight games at home, as the 10th ranked Pacers (29-10, 10-7 PBC) fell in game one to Augusta State (23-17-1, 8-11-1 PBC) 6-5 in 12 innings and dropped the nightcap 7-4. It also marked the first time the Pacers lost two consecutive games in over a month as the Jaguars snapped their seven-game losing streak.
In game one, Max Fischer and
Steve Dunham had a pitchers duel going through six innings. With the score 1-1 entering the seventh, ASU pushed across three runs on five hits including RBI singles by Bennett Mayfield, Brandon Sumlin, and Lee Rose to claim a 4-1 advantage.
With their backs against the wall, USCA rallied for two in the eighth as
Daniel Quartararo notched a sacrifice fly and
Steven Kinney singled home
Casey Derhak, who had doubled, to slice the margin to one at 4-3.
With one out in the ninth,
Darryl Pui tripled to left center, tying a school record with his second three-bagger of the game.
Zach Cooper's sacrifice fly forced extra innings.
Garrick McGrath's two out single in the 10th plated Sam Barth with the go ahead run, but the Pacers were not done yet.
Robert Davis led off the home half of the 10th with a solo homer over the left field wall to knot things up at 5-5. In a potentially game changing play, however, Davis and Barth, ASU's catcher, exchanged words as Davis crossed home and the two were promptly ejected from the ball game. Davis finished 3-for-5 with one RBI and one run scored.
Following a scoreless 11th, Mayfield led off the 12th with a double down the left field line and later scored on Kevin Kelley's sacrifice fly.
Brandon Barenie pounded a one-out single up the middle, stole second, but after an intentional walk to
Justin Williams, Pui grounded into the game ending double play.
Pui finished 2-for-6 with two triples, Derhak went 2-for-4 with two doubles, while Cooper was 2-for-3 with two RBI.
Sumlin led the Jags going 4-for-7 while McGrath was 3-for-6 with two runs scored and Kelley was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI.
Steve Dunham tossed 9.0 innings scattering 10 hits and one walk, allowing four runs, all earned, and striking out five in the no decision.
Mark Yarbrough (5-1) suffered his first setback of the season allowing the game-winning run on two hits and one walk over 2.0 innings.
Preston Crews (2-0) picked up the win for ASU working the final 3.0 innings surrendering one earned run on four hits and three walks.
In game two, USC Aiken led 4-0 before the Jaguars scored seven unanswered including four in their final at bats to claim the 7-4 win.
Davis got the Pacers on the board in the first with a sac fly plating Derhak. It was Davis again in the third with a three-run blast off starter David Beumel to make it 4-0. Davis, who was hit by a pitch in his next at bat, finished 1-for-1 with all four Pacer RBI.
ASU got three back in the fourth on three hits and an error keyed by a solo homer off the bat of Kelley.
Kelley led off the seventh with a triple to left center and was singled home by McGrath to tie the game at 4-4. With two on and no one out, Chris Demons tripled to left center to break it open to a 6-4 game.
The Pacers went down in order in the seventh to end the game.
Derhak and Pui each finished with two hits. Rose, Mayfield, and Kelley had two hits for Augusta State.
Derek Claussen (4-3) gave up seven earned runs on eight hits and one walk in 6.1 innings in the loss.
Steven Spragg (2-2) tossed 3.1 innings of one-hit relief for the win.
