UNF Sweeps Twinbill

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 JACKSONVILLE, Fla.--USC Aiken (36-13, 13-10 PBC) entered the weekend with an opportunity to take over first place in the Peach Belt Conference baseball standings. A doubleheader sweep on Saturday, however, to third-ranked North Florida (35-11, 19-7 PBC) all but ended the eighth-ranked Pacers' hopes of winning their first conference title since 1994. The Ospreys rallied to take game one 8-6 and cruised to the 10-4 win in game two. USCA falls to 1-10 all-time versus UNF in Jacksonville, but still has hopes of earning the program's first NCAA regional bid in a dozen years.

Game one's 8-6 loss was just the second in 32 games this season when the Pacers have scored six or more runs.

Daniel Quartararo and Robert Davis combined for six hits, five RBI, and three runs scored while Darryl Pui went 4-for-5 to lead USCA in the opener.

The Pacers grabbed the 3-0 lead on a pair of RBI doubles by Quartararo and Davis in the third inning. UNF got on the board in the home half of the third when Matt Oxendine's sacrifice fly plated Jonathan Hodach to make it 3-1.

North Florida claimed its first lead in the fourth. Hodach doubled in a pair of runs while Brennan Grogan singled to right field driving in Hodach to make it 4-3.

USCA responded in the fifth with back-to-back one-out home runs from Quartararo and Davis pushing the Pacers back in front 5-4.

Tied 5-5 heading into the bottom of the seventh, Marion Knowles and Damon Olinto registered RBI base hits as UNF took an 8-5 lead.

Casey Derhak had a sacrifice fly in the eighth to set the final margin at 8-6.

Sadry Cafe, Knowles, Olinto, Hodach, and Mike Fryrear each had two of the 13 Osprey hits.

Steve Dunham (6-2) was chased after 6.0 innings allowing six runs, five earned, on nine hits and one walk, striking out three in the loss.

Ryan Amason did not make it out of the sixth going 5.1 innings surrendering five runs, four earned, on 10 hits and one walk in the no decision. Jared Incinelli (3-1) went 2.1 innings in relief giving up one earned run on two hits and two walks in the win. Josh Papelbon (9) scattered three hits but held the Pacers scoreless over the final 1.1 innings for the save.

In game two, North Florida jumped on the Pacers early scoring six in the second inning to take an 8-0 lead en route to winning 10-4.

Jon Skorupski was the hero of the day for the Ospreys going 2-for-4 with two home runs and five RBI. Skorupski's two-run blast in the first inning made it 2-0. He hit a three-run shot in the second inning as UNF pushed across six more runs.

Bob Hatcher led off the third inning with a homer to left field to finally get the Pacers on the board at 8-1. After a one-out single to shortstop by Marc Joehnk, Pui continued his offensive day blasting a two-run homer over the left field fence trimming the margin to 8-3.

Davis added an RBI double in the seventh, but that was only cosmetic in setting the final score at 10-4.

Pui was 2-for-3 with two RBI. Cafe also homered for UNF going 3-for-3.

Kyle Aylor (7-1) allowed three earned runs on five hits and two walks in 4.0 innings in the win. Jeremy Papelbon (2) earned the save by going the final 3.0 innings, giving up one earned run on three hits and one walk.

Derek Claussen (4-4) didn't make it out of the second inning getting tagged for seven earned runs on six hits and one walk in 1.1 innings in the loss.

USC Aiken and North Florida will play their series finale tomorrow at Harmon Field beginning at 1:00 PM. The Pacers have not been swept in a conference series since dropping three to Kennesaw State on April 16-17, 2004.
