USC Aiken Takes Care Of Newberry

Box Score AIKEN, S.C.--Darryl Pui and Robert Davis combined for four hits, four RBI, and four runs scored as the 13th ranked USC Aiken Pacers (32-10) rolled to the 11-1 win over Newberry College (15-31) on a chilly Wednesday night in non-conference baseball action at Roberto Hernandez Stadium. Everyone got in on the action as the two teams combined to use 41 players. The Pacers swept the two-game season series by the combined margin of 23-3.

USC Aiken jumped on the board in the bottom of the first with four runs on four hits. Casey Derhak led off with a single and later scored on a wild pitch. Steven Kinney plated Daniel Quartararo on a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0. With two on and two out, it was Pui's RBI single to left field driving in Marc Joehnk and Davis that was the big blow making it 4-0.

Newberry countered with their only run of the night in the second inning. After a one out single up the middle by Nick Martin, Matt Webb doubled down the left field line cutting the margin to 4-1. Right fielder T.J. McCord was the only Indian with more than one hit going 2-for-3.

The Pacers tacked on six more in the fifth. Brandon Barenie singled to center field and Pui doubled to left, each driving in a pair of runs. Bob Hatcher smacked an RBI triple to right center plating Pui. It was the first career three-bagger for the Pacers' senior catcher.

Davis finished 2-for-4 with three runs scored, extending his hitting streak to 19 games. Pui was 2-for-4 with one run scored and a game-high four RBI. Hatcher and Quartararo were each 2-for-4 while redshirt freshman Brad Johnson slapped a double down the right field line in his only at bat.

Chris Ericksen tossed 4.0 solid innings allowing one earned run on five hits, striking out two in the no decision. Harold Sofield (1-0) notched his first career win in 2.0 innings of scoreless, two-hit relief.
Joe McIsaac (1-2) failed to record an out surrendering three earned runs on three hits before a line-drive back up the middle knocked him out of the game with an injury.

USC Aiken, 27-1 when scoring six or more runs, has won 13 of their last 15 non-conference games. The Pacers will now host Peach Belt Conference co-leader #12 Kennesaw State for a key three-game series. USCA, third in the PBC, has dropped 12-straight games to the Owls and are 1-14 over the past five seasons, but the Pacers have won eight of their last 10 conference games this year. The series opener will take place on Friday, April 15 at 7:00 PM.
