Box Score 2 FLORENCE, S.C.--In a battle of top-30 baseball teams, 30th ranked USC Aiken and number 29 Francis Marion University each claimed a win today in a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader in Florence, S.C. The Pacers (11-4, 4-4 PBC) won game one, 5-0, on the back of
Steve Dunham, who pitched eight shutout innings and struck out seven batters. The Patriots (12-6-1, 4-6-1 PBC) won the second game by a score of 4-2.
USCA gave Dunham all the support he would need in the first inning of game one.
Robert Davis got the Pacers on the board with an RBI single to left field, scoring
Casey Derhak.
Steven Kinney's (2) three-run home run over the right field fence gave USC Aiken a 4-0 advantage after one inning.Â
Dunham (2-1) retired the Patriots in order in four of the eight innings he pitched, scattered eight hits and did not issue a walk. FMU threatened to score in the third with back-to-back singles to lead off the inning, but Dunham retired the next three batters to get out of the jam.
Davis went three-for-five with a run scored and one knocked in. Derhak and
Brandon Barenie each finished two-for-five with a run scored.Â
Dylan Owen settled down after the first two innings and went the distance for Francis Marion, allowing five runs on 13 hits and striking out 10 batters. USCA had seven hits in the first two innings but just six in the final seven innings.
The loss ended a 17-game winning streak for Francis Marion at Cormell Field.
The Patriots wasted no time setting the tone in game two. In the bottom of the first inning, FMU capitalized on a lead off walk when Luke Ogletree drove in Omar Quiles. Ogletree later scored on a USC Aiken fielding error to make it 2-0.Â
The Pacers answered in the top of the second inning with
Bob Hatcher's two run double to left center that tied the game. But the scoring for USCA ended in that inning.
Francis Marion scored once in the bottom of the second inning and another in the third for the 4-2 victory. Quiles tripled to left field to score Brian McFadden in the second. Back-to-back Patriot singles in the third put runners on the corners. FMU scored its final run on Stan Markle's fielder's choice.
Lee Tabor allowed just two Pacer base runners after the second inning. Tabor (4-1) pitched all seven innings, allowed just four hits, one walk and struck out four.Â
Derek Claussen (1-2) started for USCA and allowed seven hits and four runs in four innings of work. Only two of FMU's four runs were earned and Claussen walked one and struck out one batter.
Nick Wandless allowed two hits in two innings of relief work.
Ogletree finished three-for-three with two runs scored and one RBI for the Patriots. Michael Ward went two-for-three.
USC Aiken and Francis Marion will battle for the series win on Sunday. The single game will begin at 1:00 p.m., in Florence, S.C.Â
