Box Score 2 AIKEN, S.C.--The 25th ranked West Virginia State Yellow Jackets (15-9) rallied for three runs in their final at bat to halt #17 USC Aiken's (23-8) winning streak at a season-high seven games on Saturday afternoon in non-conference baseball action at Roberto Hernandez Stadium. The Pacers took game one 9-7 but fell in the nightcap 8-7. The series finale defeat also marked the first time in 20 games this season that USCA lost when scoring six or more runs (19-1).
West Virginia State notches its first win in 10 tries against the Pacers, who have won 12 of their last 14 games. USCA is now 10-5 versus teams ranked in the top 30.
In game one, USCA grabbed the 3-1 lead with two in the third. After a one-out walk to
Brandon Barenie, he stole second, advanced to third on an error, and then scored on a balk.
Justin Williams also singled in
Darryl Pui.
West Virginia State took their first lead with four in the sixth keyed by a two-run blast off the bat of Kyle Jones. Jones was 2-for-3 with three RBI.
The Pacers countered with three in the bottom of the inning on
Robert Davis' RBI single to left field and
Marc Joehnk's bases loaded single to right center plating
Steven Kinney and Davis as USCA went back on top 6-5.
Anthony Courts knotted things up at 6-6 in the top of the seventh with an RBI single to center field, but the Pacers put the game in the books with three in the home half of the seventh keyed by Kinney's two-RBI single through the left side of the infield.
In total, the two teams combined for 16 runs on 32 hits and stranded a small village of 29 runners on base in the slugfest.
Davis and Joehnk each went 3-for-5 with two RBI while
Zach Cooper,
Daniel Quartararo, and Kinney each had two hits. Kinney had a team-high three RBI.
Ryan Taylor was 3-for-5 for the Yellow Jackets.
Mark Yarbrough (4-0) picked up the win with 1.2 innings of relief allowing two earned runs on five hits and two walks.
Nick Wandless (4) notched his fourth save of the season holding WVSU to one hit over the final 1.2 innings.
Justin Clyde (1-1) suffered the loss for the Yellow Jackets surrendering four earned runs on three hits and three walks in 1.0 inning of work.
In game two, USC Aiken trailed until a five spot in the sixth inning of the seven-inning game put the Pacers up 7-5. But West Virginia State plated three in the seventh to claim the 8-7 win.
Goode doubled to right field in the third bringing around Robert Flinn for the game's first run. That score stood up until the fifth when the Yellow Jackets tacked on three more including a two-RBI double by Flinn to right center.
USC Aiken finally got their bats going in the bottom of the inning with an RBI double by Joehnk and an RBI ground out by
Zach Cooper making it 4-2.
After Ryan Bailey scored on a Pacer error, the Pacers exploded for five in the sixth. Williams,
Casey Derhak, and Quartararo had RBI singles while Cooper drew a bases loaded walk to make it 7-5.
Down to their last three outs to avoid the sweep, Flinn led off by getting hit by a pitch and then Goode took
Chris Ericksen's pitch over the wall in right field to tie the game at 7-7. Cory Kidder singled back up the middle with two outs scoring Josh Miller with the eventual game winner.
Kinney and Joehnk each had two hits for the Pacers while Derhak extended his hitting streak to 16 games.
Goode led WVSU going 2-for-3 with three RBI.
Derek Claussen tossed 6.0 strong innings allowing five runs, four earned, on four hits and five walks, fanning three in the no decision. Ericksen (0-1) gave up three runs on three hits in 0.2 of an inning in the loss.
Christopher Shores (1-1) faced three batters, giving up two hits but recording one out for the win. Willis Brandenburg (2) picked up the save working the seventh.
USC Aiken will continue its 10-game home stand on Wednesday when the Pacers face Anderson College at 6:00 PM.
