HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The USCA baseball team overcame an early four-run deficit as
Blake Martin's single drove in
Yariel Diaz in the ninth inning for the 6-5 victory.
The Pacers are now 27-12 on the season.
Head coach
Keith Gorman's squad trailed 4-0 entering the fourth inning but quickly sliced the deficit in half. Diaz earned a full-count walk and Martin was hit by a pitch. After a fly ball allowed Diaz to race to third,
Maverick Grigsby's double to right field cleared the bases, making it 4-2.
With one down in the fifth,
Evan Harding registered an infield single and trotted to second when
Chancellor Jennings was hit by a pitch. With two down and runners on second and third, Martin's base knock plated Harding.
Salvatore Laimo knotted the game at 4-4 with a single to right center field, allowing Jennings to cross home plate.
Facing a 5-4 deficit in the seventh, Jennings poked a one-out single to right center field and moved to second on a groundout. Jennings came around to score as Martin reached on an error, knotting the score at 5-5.
With two down in the ninth, Diaz doubled to left and scored on Martin's single for the one-run cushion.
Coker loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, but
Luke Norman was able to get a pop-up in foul territory to seal the win.
For the game, Martin led the way with two hits, two RBI and a run scored. Diaz and Laimo notched two hits apiece. Diaz scored twice as did Jennings. Grigsby knocked in a pair in the win.
On the mound,
Nick Napolitano started, worked 2.1 innings and had three strikeouts.
Kyle Stock tossed 2.2 innings and recorded four strikeouts. Norman went 4.0 innings, had four strikeouts and did not give up a run while picking up the win.
