Box Score 2 COLUMBUS, Ga.--USC Aiken suffered a doubleheader sweep by Peach Belt Conference opponent Columbus State University today in Columbus, Ga. The Pacers (5-3, 2-3 PBC) lost game one 12-3 and lost the second game to the Cougars (6-5, 2-3 PBC) by a score of 13-1.
In game one, Columbus State jumped out early with three runs in the first inning and another run in the second. Stephen Worrell's double down the right field line scored Brad Shea. An error by
Robert Davis on a pick-off attempt allowed the Cougars to plate two more runs in the opening inning.
Trent Bianco's two-run home run in the fifth inning made it 6-0 and CSU added three more in the sixth and three more in the seventh for a 12-0 lead.
The Pacers finally got on the board in the top of the eighth inning when
Daniel Quartararo homered to left center. USCA scored twice more in the ninth to set the final score. Quartararo finished two-for-five with two RBIs and a run scored.
Garrett Groce went three-for-five for Columbus State with two runs scored and an RBI. Nick Shay finished three-for-three with a run scored and one batted in.
Steve Dunham (1-1) took the loss for the Pacers after allowing six runs on 10 hits in five innings of work. Nolan Pendleton (2-0) went the distance for the Cougars, giving up 11 hits but just three runs, two earned runs and striking out six batters.Â
Derek Claussen retired the first six batters he faced in game two, and
Brandon Barenie's leadoff home run in the second staked USC Aiken to an early 1-0 lead.
Columbus State got to Claussen in the third with three runs. Groce's double to left center drove in two Cougars. After
Bobby White replaced Claussen, Billy Howard knocked in another run with a single up the middle.
CSU platted six more in the fourth inning. Groce drove in another with a single, Howard drew a bases loaded walk, Worrell's double to left center scored three and Shay's single through the left side drove in run number six for a 9-0 Cougar lead.Â
Columbus State added four more in the fifth and won easily, 13-1. Brian Baker (1-1) pitched six innings of five hit ball four CSU before giving way to Casey Clifton in the seventh. Claussen (0-1) gave up three runs in two and two-thirds innings pitched and struck out three batters.
Howard and Worrell each went two-for-three with four RBIs. In both games combined, Groce went five-for-eight with four runs scored and four RBIs.
USC Aiken and Columbus State will finish off the series with a single game on Sunday beginning at 1:00 p.m., in Columbus, Ga.Â
