Pacers Open PBC Play With Doubleheader Split

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 AIKEN, S.C.--USC Aiken (4-1, 1-1 PBC) lost game one 9-5 but rallied to take the nightcap 9-8 over USC Upstate (5-2, 1-1 PBC) in Peach Belt Conference baseball action on Saturday afternoon at Roberto Hernandez Stadium. The Pacers' win snapped a five-game losing streak to their rivals.

In game one, the Pacers were hot early plating four in the second on a pair of long balls. Darryl Pui led off the inning with a home run to straight away center field to make it 1-0. Daniel Quartararo added a three-run blast over the right field wall.

Leading 5-0 entering the sixth inning, however, Upstate scored nine unanswered to take the 9-5 win. Matt Goyea drove in two in the sixth on an RBI single while Brad Wingo added an RBI double in the seventh to knot things up at 5-5.

With the bases loaded in the ninth, Jim Kais smacked a bases clearing double to left field to break the tie and surge USC Upstate in front 9-5.

Goyea finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored while Kyle Bowley was 3-for-5 with a pair of runs for the Spartans.

Marc Joehnk went 3-for-5 for USCA while Casey Derhak and Pui each added a pair of hits.

Ryan Mitchell (0-1) suffered the loss for the Pacers allowing four runs, two earned, on three hits and one walk in 1.2 innings of relief.

James Dalton (1-1) picked up the win after tossing 4.2 innings of three-hit, six-strikeout, shutout baseball.
In game two, USC Aiken grabbed an 8-5 lead after three innings and held on for the win.

Brandon Barenie's RBI triple in the second sparked a four run inning as the Pacers claimed a 7-5 lead.

Quartararo's RBI double in the bottom of the sixth plated Joehnk with what would be the game winner. Joehnk finished 2-for-4 with three runs scored while Quartararo was 2-for-4 with three RBI.

Ross Vigder and Goyea were each a perfect 3-for-3 for USC Upstate and combined to score four runs. Josh Clark was 2-for-3 with two RBI.

Trey Williams (1-0) notched the win for USCA after 2.0 innings of shutout, one-hit baseball. Nick Wandless (2) recorded the save.
