Box Score AIKEN, S.C.--USC Upstate (formerly USC Spartanburg) may have a new name, but they continued their same old dominance over USC Aiken in Peach Belt Conference men's soccer. The Spartans (4-1-0, 1-0-0 PBC), the PBC coaches' preseason favorite to win the conference title, tallied four second half goals to break open a 3-1 half-time game for the 7-1 win over the Pacers (3-2-1, 0-1-0 PBC). USC Upstate has won five-straight over the Pacers and improve to 15-1-0 in the all-time series.
Gary Lynch (8) wasted no time getting the Spartans on the board when he beat goalkeeper
Harold Tate from 10 yards out off a nice cross from Liam Slack in the third minute of play. Lynch added his second marker in the 22nd minute when his corner kick hooked in and beat Tate untouched for a 2-0 lead.
Lynch also scored less than three minutes into the second half on a penalty kick to notch the hat trick. Slack finished with two goals and two assists while Jorge Atehortga added one goal and one assist for USC Upstate.
After an own goal by USC Aiken push the score to 3-0 in the 28th minute, the Pacers settled down and started to assert some offensive pressure the rest of the half.
Emmanuel Maduka (5) notched his team-leading fifth goal of the season with less than three minutes to play in the half.
Neil Berment played a nice pass ahead from 25 yards away setting up Maduka's one-on-one battle with the keeper.
Terrence McGee stopped three shots and allowed just the one goal for the Spartans. Tate,
Zac Van Frank, and
Marcos Rodriguez all saw time in net for the Pacers, combining for three saves.
After Atehortua's goal 1:45 into the second half and Lynch's penalty kick pushed the margin to 5-1 in favor of the Spartans, Slack tacked on two more tallies in the 62nd and 63rd minutes to set the final margin at 7-1.
USC Upstate held a decisive 16-9 advantage in shots as well as a 6-3 edge in corner kicks.
USC Aiken will travel to Americus, Ga. on Tuesday, September 21 to face Georgia Southwestern at 5:00 PM. USC Upstate will play at Milligan College on Saturday, September 25 at 2:00 PM.
