Farr's 14th Inning Homer Gives Pacers 4-2 Win

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 PEMBROKE, NC--Ashley Farr hit a two-run homer in the top of the 14th inning in game two of a Peach Belt Conference baseball doubleheader to give USC Aiken (21-15, 8-9 PBC) a 4-2 win overall UNC Pembroke (17-21, 7-13 PBC) on Saturday evening at Braves Field. UNCP won game one 6-4 to snap the Pacers six-game winning streak.

In game one, UNC Pembroke used a three-run sixth inning to break open a 3-3 tie and hang on for the 6-4 series opening win.

USC Aiken got on the board in the first when an RBI double to right center by Robert Davis plated Zach Cooper to make it 1-0. Davis went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and two RBI in the game. Cooper was 1-for-3 with two walks and two runs scored.

The Braves countered in the bottom of the second when Andrew Rosen (3) led off the inning with a home run to right field.

The Pacers countered quickly with two runs in the top of the third. Bradley Key (7) smacked a two-run blast over the right field wall with two outs to push the Pacers in front again 3-1.

Andy Jewell, however, answered for the Braves with a one-out, two RBI double to left field to knot the game up at 3-3.

It remained all square until starter Wes McColl and the Pacers ran into some problems in the bottom of the sixth. Jewell led off the inning with a double to left field, his second of the game. Rosen singled Jewell home to break the 3-3 tie. With two outs, however, Ben Crowell singled home Rosen and Nick Hoffman doubled to left field, plating Crowell to make it 6-3. Peden Rucker came on to record the final out of the inning by fanning Chris Beck.

McColl (2-3) went 5.2 allowing six earned runs on nine hits and two walks in the loss. Rucker held the Braves to no runs and one hit over the final 2.1 innings, not issuing a walk and striking out three.
Robert Davis added a sacrifice fly scoring Daniel Quartararo in the seventh to bring the Pacers within two at 6-4, but neither team was able to score again.

Tyson Van Dam (4-3) went 6.1 innings scattering four earned runs on seven hits and three walks, striking out two in the win. Eric Stewart (6) held the Pacers scoreless over the final 2.2 innings giving up just two hits and striking out four in notching the save.

In game two, both starting pitchers delivered masterful performances in earning a pair of no-decisions.

Neither team was able to score through the first four and one-half innings of the seven-inning nightcap. Isaac Ezzell (5) finally broke the scoreless tie in the fifth with a one-out, solo homer to left center.

The Pacers answered in the sixth. Quartararo led off the inning with a double to right center. After advancing to third on a Cooper fly out to right, Ashley Farr's sac fly to left field plated Quartararo with the game-tying run.

USCA and UNC Pembroke played the next seven innings in scoreless fashion.

In the top of the 14th inning, Quartararo slapped his second double of the game to right field and then scored on Cooper's RBI single through the left side of the infield to make it 2-1. Farr then proceeded to step to the plate and line a two-run shot over the right center field fence for what proved to be the game winner, making it 4-1. The homer gave the 5-11 senior from West Columbia, S.C. 31 career long balls, tying Demetrick Drumming's career mark.

With two outs and no body on in the bottom of the 14th, Beck doubled to left field and Tripp Lockhart singled him home to cut the lead to 4-2. Nick Wandless hit Andy Jewell to load the bases, but got Rosen to strike out swinging to end the game.

Steve Dunham went 10.0 innings for the Pacers scattering nine hits, allowing just one earned run, striking out 10 and walking two. Wandless (4-0) tossed the final 4.0 innings giving up one earned run on four hits and one walk, fanning three in the win.

Ashley Brewer tied a PBC record going 12.0 innings and allowing just one earned run on four hits and two walks, striking out eight in the no-decision. Steven Stewart (0-5) surrendered three earned runs on four hits in 1.0 inning in suffering the loss.
Quartararo led the Pacers in game two going 3-for-6 with two runs scored and a pair of doubles extending his hitting streak to 13 games. Cooper also had a multi-hit game going 2-for-6 with an RBI and a run scored. Farr was 1-for-5 but had three big RBI and one run scored.

Jewell led the Braves with a 3-for-5 performance.

USC Aiken and UNC Pembroke will play the series finale tomorrow at Braves Field beginning at 1:00 PM. The Pacers have won four-straight series against the Braves. USCA has also won three of five PBC series thus far this season, but looking for their first away from Roberto Hernandez Stadium.
