Key Gets Record-Setting Double

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 KENNESAW, GA--Adrian Colton's one-out, walk-off single to center field scored Dustin Atkinson for the game winning run as Kennesaw State (27-21, 14-13 PBC) completed the Peach Belt Conference baseball series sweep of USC Aiken (24-22, 9-15 PBC) for the fourth-straight year. KSU took game one of Saturday afternoon's doubleheader 17-7 and won game two 3-2.

In game two, Bradley Key doubled to right field in the fourth inning for his 53rd career two-bagger, breaking Tavis Cummings' (1999-2002) school record of 52. The 5-11 junior from Evans, Georgia needs just five more to tie the PBC career mark.

The Pacers fall to 6-29 all-time against the Owls including 12-straight defeats. USCA also continues its woes away from Roberto Hernandez Stadium as they have dropped six-straight road conference series and are 1-9 over the past two seasons. In sharp contrast, USCA is 7-1 at home over the same time period.

In game one, Daniel Quartararo (4) led off the game with a homer to left center as the Pacers took a quick 1-0 lead. But KSU would score one in the bottom half of the inning on a bases loaded double play by the Pacers allowing Clint Watters to score. The Owls tacked on four more in the second on three RBI singles to seize a 5-1 lead.

The Pacers got an RBI single from Robert Davis bringing home Brandon Barenie in the third to cut the lead to 5-2, but KSU added an RBI single by Colton and a Kevin Gergel (7) home run in the fourth to push ahead 8-2.

USCA countered with three of its own in the top of sixth to pull within striking distance at 8-5 on Bob Hatcher's (2) three-run homer.

A quick answer by the Owls, however, with seven runs in the home half of the sixth thwarted all ideas of a Pacer rally as KSU claimed a commanding 15-5 lead. As a team, KSU had 16 hits including eight extra bases hits. The Pacers had 12 hits but only two for extra bases.

Ashley Farr's one-out single through the left side in the ninth plated Barenie and Hatcher to set the final margin at 17-7.

Quartararo led the Pacers at the plate going 3-for-5 with one RBI and one run scored. Hatcher was 2-for-3 with three RBI and a pair of runs scored. Farr, Barenie, and Davis each pounded out two hits and combined for three RBI and two runs scored.

Colton paced the Owls with a 4-for-6 afternoon driving in three and scoring one more. Atkinson finished 3-for-5 with three RBI and three runs scored while Brett Campbell, Scott Hendrix, Derrick Tucker, and Watters each had two hits and combined to score eight runs and knock in four more.

Wes McColl (2-5) was chased after just 1.1 innings allowing five earned runs on five hits and three walks, striking out two in the loss. Four more Pacer hurlers saw action with each giving up at least two runs.

Brent Jackson (4-6) tossed 6.0 innings giving up five runs, two earned, on nine hits and one walk in the win. Blake Whitaker worked the final 3.0 innings in the non-save situation surrendering two earned runs on three hits and two walks, fanning three.

In game two's pitchers' duel, Colton's timely single to center field in the bottom of the seventh, his only hit of the game, proved to be the difference.

Justin Williams led off the third with a double to left center before Quartararo drove him in with a single through the right side as the Pacers took a 1-0 lead.

USCA held that advantage until the bottom of the fourth when Gergel scored on a throwing error by the Pacers trying to turn an inning-ending double play.

Mike Cunningham smacked his first double of the season to score Key in the sixth and give USCA back the lead 2-1. But in bottom of the inning, the Pacers were again unsuccessful in turning a bases loaded, inning-ending double play as Gergel scored to tie it up at 2-2.

After the Pacers failed to score in the top of the seventh, Atkinson led off with a single and was sacrificed to second. Colton singled to center to end the game 3-2.

Key and Williams each went 2-for-3 with one run scored and one double for the Pacers.

Gergel was 2-for-3 with two runs scored while Campbell was 2-for-2.

Justin Wimberly worked 6.0 innings allowing two earned runs on eight hits, striking out four. John Robbins (4-2) allowed one hit in the seventh in earning the win.

Derek Claussen (4-4) was the hard luck loser for the Pacers scattering three runs, two earned, on seven hits and one walk. Lee Cromer came on to pitch to Colton in the only batter he faced.

USC Aiken returns home for a nine-game home stand to close out the 2004 season starting on Tuesday, April 20 when the Pacers host Limestone College at 6:30 PM at Roberto Hernandez Stadium.
